RC K98 1944 - no cleaning rod - what size to restore

So I measured the cleaning rod tube by sticking a shish kabob skewer down the tube and it looks like I should pick up a 10 inch cleaning rod to put into the tube - this will bring the cleaning rod out to about 2 inches from the tip of the barrel. My question is should i bother with a cleaning rod, if I do pick a 10 inch one up what are the chances that it will thread on and look good? I'm pretty sure the 12 inch cleaning rod would extend past the tip of the barrel. Any one out there replace or add a cleaning rod to their RC K98 and was it worth it?
As always I appreciate CGNers input, advice and general comments.

I bought a 10" rod, repro sling and sight hood, along with an authentic WWII cleaning kit from these guys. Pretty happy with it. Completes the rifle.

Is it flat buttplate or cupped buttplate?

All cupped stocks take 12.5" rods.

Some flats take 10" some 12.5"

I would add the rod. The look incomplete without them IMHO.
 
Did you have any issues screwing in the replace cleaning rod or did it go n okay and what was the distance from the tip of your barrel to the tip of the cleaning rod - how many inches back is it?

Based on these pics I'm assuming flat and as it measured out 10 inches that's what i'll target for.

put a cleaning rod or some thing like that down there and mark it or tape it off were it exits and see how long the channel is.
 
If you have the rifle apart it is super easy to tell which one it is without doing any measurements. On the 10" stocks, the rod nut is visible on the outside bottom of the stock where the lower band fits (band has to be off to see it) and the 12" rods have the nut visible inside the barrel channel.
 
I was shocked the last time I purchased two RC K98's just two weeks ago.

One rifle retained the original site hood and one of the original capture screws.

In the bags of goodies for each rifle I got two original WWII Mauser pouches, an original 12" K98 cleaning rod, a late war RG34 cleaning chain and a WWII 91/30 Mosin tool and oiler.

There goes the idea that all these parts were removed and melted down for scrap steel, really all the cleaning rods are sitting overseas somewhere and are simply not being delivered with the majority of rifles.
 
I've not heard of anyone else ever receiving a hood or cleaning rod with an RC.

They were either added or you got lucky.

Based on whTs coming out of Russia these days I can't see them still being there.
 
I noticed PS (Jean) has a byf44 that still retains the site hood and I have come across a few rifles in the past that retained the one or even two capture screws.

The rifle that had the hood was a late dou45 with a 'mint' bore. Probably captured in the factory and then re-finished....

So maybe only a few of the late rifles retain the hoods?

The cleaning rods are certainly original WWII and so were the late war linked RG34 cleaning chains.

I guess I just lucked out, because the same week I bought another RC from a different store and received no bonuses what so ever.
 
10 inch cleaning rod

So I picked up a 10 inch cleaning rod and when I tired to put it on my K98 it would not seat properly - I could only get it in about 3/4 of the way and it still stuck out about 3 inches beyond the end of the barrel. Any suggestions - I sprayed in some hopps oil into the cleaning rod recess and will try to see if I can get it all the way tomorrow.
Anyone else have this issue?

Could there be a broken bit of rod in there?
 
If there is a broken piece it's odd that it's broken off 3 or so inches from the base and not the top. A handy little fibre optics camera would be nice to have in the toolbox. The replacement rod was snug all the way in and I found that I had to spin it to go in and then take it out.
On the flip side I got my replacement front sight hood cover on with no issues. Looks very sharp.
