Hi everyone,

So im asking if anyone got some miracle way to clean a RC K98 bore, used half my bottle of hoppes 9, 200 patches and 3 bronze brushes and the suckers still come as black/grey as the first one

I live in a small town so im pretty limited to which cleaning product i can get, tried to plug the barrel and let it soak in mineral spirit without success, tried heating the barrel (many people say to shoot it hot then clean) without success again.

Please help my arms if i got to wear another brushes i think im throwing it on the wall for the next decade.

x2 on Wipeout. It's an expanding foam. Fill the bore, leave overnight, run a patch through in the morning, repeat as necessary. I think I got mine from Rustywood Trading. I couldn't find it locally. They ship Canpar at a reasonable rate. I bought several cans to make it worthwhile.

Yeah saw people talking good about wipeout online but like i said was hopping to source something locally since i got the rifle in pieces i was hoping to get it clean before putting it back together.

Guess ill have to order online and wait then

Wipeout is good stuff. Let it work overnight. leave the rifle muzzle down on a pad of pare towel. You will be able to tell by the colour of the gunge each mornign what is coming out.

If you want something aggressive that you have local, go to the hardware store and buy a bottle of ammonia. This will come out very green/blue on the patches if there is copper in the barrel.

Also, buy a can of rubbing compound for polishing old car paint. It is a mild abrasive. It will remove the black carbon crap.

Alternating rubbing compound and ammonia should get it clean.

Wipe out is awesome! I use the liquid Patch out version as you get more actual product for your money! Patchout and Accelerator are $26.00 for 8 oz. compared to $29.00 for 5 oz of Wipeout from Alberta Tactical Rifle. Buy both the accelerator and the patch out. Patch first with the accelerator, then patch with the patch out. Leave overnight muzzle down in a used margarine or yogurt container and you won't believe what you will find in the morning! Patch dry and then repeat as needed! I actually put a small patch in the chamber as well and soak it with patch out to let it slowly wash down the bore as well. It also keeps the bore nice and wet. I then place it near a heat register so that the barrel remains nice and warm to help speed up the chemical reaction. Not sure if that helps, but doesn't hurt with it all sealed up the way I do it.

Cheers,

Ian

I would just get it reasonably clean and go shoot it. On my rc k98 the bore is dark and frosty and I don't think it will ever come out "clean". I gave up after using tons of patches and wipe out. I have an svt 40 and a mosin that's the same thing, I don't even worry about them anymore

I have a Finnish M91 Mosin that got a new barrel from Tikka in 1942, it then got used to much they had to counter bore it. When it came to me, the bore looked dark with some frosting in the grooves, maybe a 6/10. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed with hoppes, military clp, ed's red, G96, mpro7, kerosene and even boiling water to no improvement. I gave up scrubbing it and took it to the range where I slammed 40 rounds through it and ran a pull through with clp afterwards. I would now rate it an 8/10, shiny smooth rifling with bright lands and grooves. Something to do with friction and heat from firing must really help get rid of some types of fouling.

Guess ill just shoot it then, the barrel doesn't even look that bad, i can clearly see the rifling and its shinning, but it just keep comming out black no mater how many time i clean it. Got 60 bullet incoming for next week i will shoot it and see. Might order some wipeout too, can't seems to get the copper fouling out of my enfield bore, might try it on both

Thanks everyone for the answers

EDIT: Well i was just about to reassemble the whole rifle and while checking the bore before oiling i saw pitting near the crown. Explain why it never got clean, i expect rest of the bore is similar to the crown
