RC K98 locking screws..help plz

Hi guys,

The other day I bought the capture screws which my K98 was missing, but I'm having some difficulties with the instal process. I installed the capture screw which is located farther from the trigger very easily but when it comes to installing the one closest to the trigger I'm having problems. After I've screwed in the smaller screw I can't get the larger one back in (and before someone says anything, the notch on the smaller one is lined up properly). Does anyone know why this is happening? Do I need some oil?

One of mine is very finicky. Have to get it at the most precise angle.

This has happened to me on a few occasions. The locking screw on the front sounds like it isn't a perfect fit for the magazine assembly. If you look closely, when you insert the main screw, it probably is sitting just on the lip of the lock screw. You may be able to get it in but you probably won't be able to tighten it into position. Also, make sure the notched portion on the lock screw is correctly aligned to allow the main screw to slip into position.

Getting the right locking screws can be a craps shoot, I was lucky once with a perfect fitting pair for my Kar98k and lost out on another. Now I don't bother going after the screws as they can be expensive and don't always fit.

Put the main bolt in first and then play with the locking screw until it goes in.

To tune the bolts slightly so they line up with the locking screws when fully tight, either use a small washer or get a yogurt container lid, a hole punch, put a hole in the lid and cut around the hole to make a washer.

This Mauser has the yogurt lid treatment on both action screws and the lower band (small plastic spacer on bottom of stock between wood and band). Action and barrel locked in solid, shoots like a house on fire.

Try a drop of the oil and make sure your threads are clean inside the TG and on the small lock screw as well.

It takes a very steady hand and the correct gunsmith screw driver (flat blade, not tapered).

Take your time, don't force it as the threads are easy to strip.

Lots of light to see what you are doing.

One last thought, If you have "Sausage Fingers", it is next to impossible!

next thought,if these are after market screws, they might need to be fitted.
