Hey,

I recently purchased a RC K98 and when I got home and was looking over it closely I noticed a deaths head marking behind the trigger guard. I was wondering if its legit or a fake. Any help would be appreciated..Here is a link to the photo I took.

Can you post other pics of the wood? Are there any repairs?

Only reason that should appear there would be a SS conversion or repair of the stock.

Looks ok though.

The marking is legit. There's a couple tell tale signs that confirm this. I'd guess the stock is from an original conversion because of the typical large, but shallow bolt handle cutout, although I'd expect to see a stock repair on the bottom of the keel where the old gew sling mounts once were.

I cant see any stock repairs, but the butt plate, whose numbers match the stock, has been stamped twice...at 2 different times with the same number...So that looks like somebody reworked it..

Must be an earlier ('37-'39) Mauser Oberndorf stock? Waa63 and original buttplate numbering looks typical MO (although the n font is different than examples I can find for that period). CanadianAR may be right about it being possible depot repair marking. Over stamping the stock and buttplate with the same numbers isn't uncommon on these, but I'm surprised the buttplate stayed with the stock through the Soviet refurbishment process.

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate the feedback. It is strange that the original buttplate stayed on the stock.
