I "inherited" a few sets of dies and this one stumps me. It is for 30-06. The green box has "SB SIZER .30-06, PN14831, Group A. There are two resizing dies with decapping pins. #1 - SB FL R, #2 - FL 89. #2 has a somewhat longer body. The third die is Seat 89. I would like to know what I have. I also have a second set of 30-06 made by Redding......is there a discernable difference in quality between the two makers? Thanks...Dave

"...SB SIZER..." Small Base sizer die.
"...FL..." Full length sizer die.
"...Seat..." Bullet seater die.
You just have two sizer dies. The original set was likely FL and the SB die was purchased later. Some people think you need the SB for semi-autos. You don't. The FL will work just fine.
Redding and RCBS dies sets are virtually interchangable. No difference whatsoever.

Your small base 30-06 die is a good option for if you are loading for a Garand, I woudln't bother in a bolt action.

RCBS and Redding both make good dies, but Redding are more consistently perfect. I use both wiht satisfaction, but mostly buy only Redding nowdays.

"...small base 30-06 die is a good option..." The Full Length sizer die works just fine. Has for 30 years. Nice to have the option, but you don't absolutely need a small base die for an M-1. One or the other is required, every time, for a semi-auto though.

SOme rifles (especially semi autos or sometimes custom or factory rifles with tight chambers) feed and chamber better with SB dies.

RCBS sells a whole bunch of small base dies in popular cartridges not normally chambered in semi auto rifles such as the WSM line, 22-250, 243, 300 Savage, 300WM, 338WM, 270, 7RM etc.

That SB die was purchased for a reason, and if you inherited a 30-06 rifle along with the dies, such as a Garand or a Winchester 1895 or a nice bolt action, you may want to try the SB dies.

You already have it, so it's nice to have the option to use it.

Quick answers and good advise! Thanks again to CGN users. I see that the box has a recipe stuck inside the lid..."FN BAR - 52 grn. H4350, CCI 200 primer." No...drat the luck...I did not inherit the rifle but I will ask where it went. Dave
