Many years ago I had conversed with no other then H4831 (Bruce) about the proper shell holder for the 35 Remington being an RCBS #9, being the resourceful type guy Bruce had always used a #3 because it worked, and it worked fine. 5 or so years ago at the Kamloops gunshow there was a fella there selling a bucket of new shell holders, and wouldn't you believe he had a pair of #9's in the bin, I waited patiently to have lunch with Bruce and presented him with one, he laughed and told me that the #3 had worked fine for him for years but he appreciated the gesture and nodded his hat in approval as he slipped it into his coat pocket. Well today I took mine out of the package, I have one already, but today is a interesting day in the sense that I have 16 pounds of leverevelution and I am interested in their published velocities for this powder in the .35, as was Bruce, he was always interested in speed.....
So I loaded up some 200 grain spire points and some 200 grain round nose to shoot over the chronograph after some factory 200 grain round nose ammo so we can see if it really is all it's supposed to be and post my findings on here for Bruce, just in case he's got WiFi up on the great shooting range in the sky.......

Factory Federal 200 grain round nose was a bit of a disappointment both in the velocity and accuracy department.....
My 3 recorded shots were 1928,1899, and 1941 FPS with an average of 1922, ES of 42 and SD of 21

Next on the list was Hornady's 200 grain round nose with 44.8 grains of leverevelution seated to 2.510 as per the book
3 recorded shots were 1987, 2036, 2031 FPS with an average of 2018, SD of 26 and ES of 49, damn near 100 fps faster then factory ammo

and lastly, Hornady's 200 grain spire points load with 41.2 grains of leverevelution seated to 2.540 as per the FTX bullet data
3 recorded shots were 1881,1885, and 1916 FPS with an average of 1894 fps, ES of 35 and SD of 19.......but look at it.....

Now Hornady shows the round nose going at 2235 and the FTX going at 2116 with a 26 inch test barrel, given that my barrel is only 20 inches long and roughly 200 FPS slower then the load data I did find it interesting to find that I had zero pressure on these loads, in fact the primer has that under-pressure look about it so I may have to work both of these loads up slowly and see what happens with both the primer and the bolt lift

Just goes to show, again, that fastest isn’t always the most accuratest (I don’t think that’s a real word, other than in Kamlooky’s dictionary). I run into guys all the time running at the hot end of loads, like speed is all that counts. I can adjust for a loss of velocity in an accurate load, but you can’t do anything with a really fast, inaccurate load

Dang nice shooting by the way

28 FPS off the factory ammo speed and 1/4 the group size.......who needs a round nose unless the spire points prove themselves to be to steep an ogive to reputably open up at that speed??? might have to gas it up with a hair more paper and wet phone book test these babies at 50 yards before buying all that are available in canada.........
