Hello all,
This my first post to the forums, I did some experimenting this evening with my new to me RCBS Chargemaster 1500 that I thought I would share. Granted this has been done before, it's more of a verification. The scale was wiped down with anti static, followed the manufacture start up procedure and was being used in a room with minimal air movement. The powder of choice was VV N150, 36.0 grains to be exact. I threw twenty charges, one after the other, recording the time required for each charge to stabilize at the target weight. I also noted any and all over-charges. I am aware this scale is advertised to be within one tenth of the desired charge. The results are as follows
Pre-modifications
Fastest Charge - 18.03 s
Slowest Charge - 47.59 s
Average Charge - 28.21 s
# of over-charges - 4 (3 were still within the factory spec of .1, one charge was .2 over)
Next, I did the common parameter changes and McDonalds straw mod. I adjusted the first three parameters to 7.00, 2.00, 0.20 respectively. To change these parameters with the scale at 0.0 press and hold "ENTER" and "EDIT MEM" for one second and release, "ADJUST PARAMETER" should scroll across the display. To change parameters simply type a new value and press enter. *Warning: There is no factory reset that I am aware of*. The first parameter displayed is the grains below target charge the unit goes from full speed to high speed. The second parameter will be grains below target charge the unit goes from high speed to medium speed. The third and final parameter adjusted is the grains below target charge the unit goes from medium speed to slow trickle. I believe I may have to cut back slightly on my new values but I will continue to experiment.
The straw is approximately 2" long, with the spiked cut on the outside end (as pictured). These are a perfect fit to slide into the trickler. They help avoid the clumps of powder that build up and drop all at once causing overcharges. I will continue to experiment with this as well.
Now for the results!
Fastest Charge - 5.34 s
Slowest Charge - 17.88 s
Average Charge - 11.07 s
# of over-charges - 2 (both were still within the factory spec of .1)
I've requested an Area 419 replacement powder cup from the wife for Christmas, fingers crossed!
Happy Reloading CGN!
