You may have something there. I have mine plugged into a power bar and also, shut off/unplugged the transformer when not in use.
 
I went with a PACT dispenser and scale. The dispenser is precise and the scale maintains self zero after calibration. 99 of 100 throws will be exact to 0.1gn using Vihtavuori or other extruded (Varget) powders. Ball powders (H110 et.al.) will throw 98 of 100 charges to the value programed within 0.1gn.

Like every other sensitive device it has it's own troubles. Such as:

- absolutely hates statics, dry air and synthetic clothes drive it crazy sometimes... but it's so obvious and easy to avoid;

- must be leveled properly;

- hates fluorescent bulbs within several meters, must be something with magnetic fields and/or UV;

- first 3-4 charges may be +/- 0.2gr so I usually drop them back right away, after that it's steady;

Once you know that and have a beam scales/ control weights JIC, it's pretty reliable and reasonably fast.

RCBS CMC is on my short list of "nice to try" but stories posted here do not make me so sure.

If I had to tiptoe around my CMC the way you do around your Lyman.....I'd be taking it back.

I load in my garage with 4 x 4ft Fluorescent lights as the only light source in there...I imagine the Lyman would have an aneurysm and jump off the bench.
 
I have had this RCBS unit for probally 10 years now still work and just as fast as all the new modern stuff. Seems the PACT combo is a knock off of this unit.

My Chargemaster Combo is now about 4½ years old. Initially, I bought one, and after about 2 months, the display went wonky. You could still read it, and the unit worked fine, but you could only see the top half of the display plainly. I sent it back, and it was replaced promptly with the unit I have now...nary a glitch, works fine under fluorescents, is accurate {I have added a small piece to the spout to eliminate the .1 grain overcharges that would occur once in a while with extruded powders.} Needs no warmup that I have noticed, and I recalibrate it once every 2 weeks or so, but have not seen it out of calibration at any time yet. I love my Chargemaster Combo! Eagleye.
 
I have had an experience similar to Eagleye. My first one went wonky after three months (keyboard), and I sold it cheap and bought another two years ago that's still going strong. A very poor showing by a great company, and hopefully they've taken notice and improved QC.
 
I bought the Hornady unit, got it just two weeks ago and haven't had a lot of time to play but it seems to be bang on compared to my balance beam. It has thrown a couple of overcharges but it tells yoou audibly when that happens and has an audible signal when charge is done, easy to clean less bulk than the rcbs unit and landed at my door from Sinclair at $350.
 
My RCBS Chargemaster Combo started working again. I have no idea why. My cousin was playing around with it and magically started working again. I already have a Canada Post US money order sitting around adressed to RCBS that I was going to use for my replacement unit.

Figure I'll keep using it until it breaks again (if that ever happens).
