So here's the story. My Chargemaster combo has been acting up for some time, first refuseing to calibrate, then getting lazy on accepting weight imputs, then last night it started doing fabulous things when I hit "9". None of them included displaying the actual "9".

So, bright and early this morning I phone down to see about getting it repaired. Seems you send it in with $45 and they either fix it, or give you a new one.

That was until I mentioned I was from Canada. Then, and I'm not makeing this up, the procedure is to take a hammer, smash it into about 60 pieces, take digital pictures of it, and send the pictures in with $65 or the Visa info equivilent.

Naturally, my first comment was "Ya got to be kidding" followed by attempts to trick him into laughing or saying or April fools, or otherwise giveing up on the joke. I even asked him if they had a competition to see how many Canadians they could get to smash their Chargemasters with a hammer, but he denied any knowledge of such a contest.

I guess my 2 questions are this; "Am I getting my leg pulled by an expert?", and "Would it be more fun to brain shoot it with my brand new M70 .458 Win mag and factory loaded Trophy Bonded Bear Claws?"

do what they say... rcbs was awesome for me i had to do the same thing, smashing it saves you the shipping down there. They are not pulling your leg... if they are i should expect something to happen with my warrantied unit.
 
...and yes, you MUST shoot it.

With something big.

458 should do it but I would use the most fragile bullet you can find, just for effect, like maybe a .452 pistol bullet. I think the bearclaw might just make a 458 hole through it.

We don't need a 'before' pic but an 'after' would be nice...
 
I can picture it now "NO, RCBS does not recommend you shoot the Chargemaster, as the powder load in your bullets may be unsafe, unless you weighed them another way" :)

Yeah, I could see them wanting to save on shipping, but it's a bit depressing in the age of filling landfills that they would opt for destruction instead of a ship-back - it doesn't cost them too much to ship over the border. (also tells you how much the parts are actually worth, doesn't it?) I've got a Rangemaster, but stories like this make me consider upgrading to a full Chargemaster.
 
Well, the ugly deed is done. I had to wade through hip deep snow drifts to get to the fireing position.
I was wondering what the recoil of the lightweight .458 Win Mag would be like; you know the expression "Gentle as a maiden's caress?" Well, it isn't like that at all.....................:D Actually, it's a piece of cake, feels like a fraction of what my .416 Rigby cranks out. When I mount the scope and gain another pound it will be even less, certainly nothing you would notice while shooting other appliances. I'll probably make a Lott out of it, it doesn't kick enough to kill elephants.

I had a part, albeit a much cheaper case feeder plate, replaced under warranty by Hornady. Same deal, without the smashing, for the same apparent reason. I now have 2 SR plates. Got my shipping confirmation from USPS about 4 hours after I got off the phone.

Love the service, but I'm beginning to understand why RCBS no longer allows US dealers to ship to Canada :(.
 
I think if we DON"T send copies RCBS will be more likely to be very customer oriented, we abuse this, then kiss it good bye. I would imagine they don't have thousands of these to go through and can tell if there has been a copy of another charge master.Doubt they all break the same way.
 
Although you can mail them your in-operative measure, RCBS could not return mail it without first purchasing the export permit required from their new Homeland Security regulations if I understand that requirement correctly. And they would also have to pay the return shipping. The fee you are being charged basically covers their permit cost and shipping cost of a new one but you don't have to ship the original to them at your expense. I think they've found a solution that allows them to honor their first class warranty service with a minimum of fuss and it may even save them a bit of money to boot.
 
Hey Dogleg I had two of them go bad and those dudes cheated me out of the fun! They told me to just send the money and they would replace. Oh well the one I have now is working good but if it starts to act up my .500 nitro will be ready by May and it will have to answer to that!!
 
That someone would trust me to do the right thing sort of inspires one to be trustworthy.
Its not a foreign concept to me, I've long found that if I treated men and crews like they were good for something, most would go to great lengths to prove me right. Something I learned from my dad.
