RCBS hand primer

If it's taking enough force to seat the primers that the rim is getting damaged, something isn't right. But it would be the same amount of force if you used a different hand primer or primed on the press too. Are you sure the shell holders are correct? Could also be the wrong shell holder in the package, but the odds of getting two that way are pretty slim.

I can't see how this is the hand priming tools fault as it does not touch the case, HOWEVER there may be something wrong with your shell holders. (^ETA: I see turbo_bird is thinking the same way....)

I never liked the feeling of seating primers into just deprimed/resized rifle cases so I always spend the few extra minutes and clean the primer pockets with the Lee Primer Pocket Cleaner. Much easier and better feel in the hand. (dirty job, use gloves!)

While I also have 4 of the older Lee hand primers, and a Hornady, I have one
of the RCBS units, and have never seen any of the problems with brass that you display here.
A bit baffling. Dave.

Does it do this with all calibres to just certain ones? Maybe you could post a few pics of the priming tool with and without cases in it. I can't imagine exerting enough pressure on a hand priming took to dent a case like that.

Looks to me like you never took the crimp out of the primer pocket. If it is miltary brass.

I have 2 of the #10 rcbs shell holders, which are good for 223.

I have removed the crimps for the crimped bass. Besides it does it on regular remington brass too.

I took the primer tool apart and cleaned it up a little last night as I was doing that found out that it looks like when I put a case in the shell holder and look at it from the bottom it looks like the case is not totally centered in the shell holder. I tried both shell holders and they look about the same. If you turn the case and wiggle it a bit you can line it up a bit better. So I decided to prime a few cases last night and that did help but not 100 precent. Ill play around a little more and see I what I can find out. I think Ill send out a email to rcbs this week and see what they have to say about it.

thanks for your help guys

If you have any more ideas, let me know

Shoot rcbs an email and get some new parts maybe that will fix it. They will be free so no harm in it

RCBS is just about the best reloading equipment manufacturer when it comes to replacing faulty or broken parts. I understand Dillon is good too but I have not dealt with them so have no first hand knowledge. I have had lot of RCBS stuff replaced, however, and their service has been great.

Agreed, thats one of the reasons i wanted to get something from rcbs

To have a damaged rim like that you have to be doing something wrong. Thats a big dent. That takes alot of force to do

Im not a super experienced reloader, but I dont think Im applying much force to these primers. Its one of and kind of the only reason that I can think of though. :)

this may be a dumb question but are you sure you are using the correct push pin and guide for small primers or are you using the set for large primers?

Yep, had the same problem. Your .223 is probably mil spec made for ARs so it needs to be swaged out before you can prime them

RCBS primer pocket swager tool -2 s/n 9481,, will do both small and large primer pockets

I just use my chamfer tool to do it. A lot cheaper for me but I don't run across many crimped brass. I run mainly winchester but have a few hundred rem and hornady. All the hornady was from factory ammo and was crimped.

I only have one type of brass that had crimped primers. Some UMC rounds I think. The one on the left with the blue paint in my pic.

I have a lyman primer pocket reamer (small) and I use the chamfer tool on it as well. So I dont think thts the problem here. I think it might be a alignment problem maybe......
