RCBS scale issue

Hey guys,

I have a problem with the RCBS scale that came with my rock chucker kit...

First thing I noticed was it wouldn't zero properly at all, no matter what surface and how much I adjusted it.

So I googled online and everyone keeps talking about this brass pan that you need to put on it for it to zero... my kit did not come with a brass pan and there is no mention of it in the manual...

Am I missing my pan or do I have a different version?
 
I do not have the kit you mention, but every scale I have seen the scale has a pan that is removed after weighing the charge to load the next round.
Did you purchase new or used?
Have you called the place of purchase?
Have you called RCBS?

Like the other guys have said, there should be a brass pan that holds your powder once you drop it on the scale. Call RCBS and they will likely mail you a replacement for free. If not, PM me... somehow I ended up with an extra pan, and I can mail it to you for a resonable price (cost of postage).
 
Yes your missing the brass pan and RCBS should have no problem giving you one. If you still have your original packing, the pan might be wedged in the styro foam. Phil.
 
I got the scale brand new in a brand new rock chucker kit, I haven't called RCBS yet because I can only imagine how long it will take for me to receive it... I'll double check all the packaging for the brass pan.

edit: damn, no sign of the pan :(

I was really hoping to get my first reloading started this weekend

I have that scale and use it without the brass pan. When I started using the scale I had the same problem as the OP. I didn't figure out the brass pan was needed so I removed the magnet stuff and had to add a bit of metal on the end to have the scale zero OK. I have been using it this way WO trouble. I bought a set of test weights so I know it is accurate. Just trim the metal part of the bar end that goes into the magnet until it zeros.

Just called RCBS, seems like they have seen this before... not too happy but they are mailing me a new one... who knows how long it will take for it to get here.

Not sure I wanna go about modding my pan if I mess it up I'll be waiting again.

To get you going go check the old girls baking drawer to see if there is a measuring spoon in it you can use or modify to get you reloading for now.:p
 
Haha I'm a 22 year old guy who has a house to myself unfortuneatly no old gal to steal a spoon from... I should go rooting around for something and just add a bit of weight to it until it zero's I guess?

Trip time to crappy tire. I just checked here and my old girl has better spoons than the rcbs pan.:D:D
 
Measuring spoon is a good idea. If you get really desperate, make a temporary pan out of heavy-gauge tin-foil. A penny or two on the scale before you put the pan in place should allow you to do a temporary zero until such time at the RCBS pan arrives.

Well I managed to find something that would work, it's a plastic cap for a bleach container... problem is no assortment of coins will work.

1 penny, is too light, 2 pennys is too heavy... too much for dimes, nickels etc.

Cut open a shotgun shell and use the shot.

Small nails, screws, nuts or bolts.

Splurge - cut a penny in half. (A US one so it won't be a crime up here.)

EDIT - Solder or even heavy-gauge copper wire is a good idea.
 
I just took some corn cob media and threw it in the bottom of the silver tin until it zero'd, then I'm using a bleach container cap to actually hold and measure my charges.

Fortunately I only need to use the bleach container cap for my initial load measuring because my rcbs powder dispenser has the nozzle where I can drop my charge straight into the casings.

Hold on!

Most people check their powder thrower every so often to ensure it is still throwing the intended weight. It happens.

Patience - your tray will come.

Good idea WRT the media.
