Conversation recently re: rcmp firearms proficiency brought to mind a memory going way back to when they were being issued the Sig/Sauer P226 9mm.

I was an IPSC "Black Badge" instructor at the time. A friend who was a revolver shooter had been grooming a couple of rcmp officers (one male, one female) in IPSC with their issue S&W revolvers. He asked me if I would give them some instruction on shooting their new issue semi-autos, an abbreviated "Black Badge" if you will.

We met at the local range (Chilliwack). They arrived with the guns; one holstered, the other in the box! We went through the basics of loading, unloading, etc. We did a lot of "Draw & Fire" exercises in IPSC back in the day and we quickly established that the first shot in DA mode at 15 yds and beyond was a guaranteed miss. A lot of shooters with the CZ Shadow have the same problem today.

Next we discovered that a magazine dropped on a hard surface would result in a bent floor plate lip that prevented re-insertion. The male rcmp succeed in re-seating one but then it was a bugger to get out.

I wrote letters to Sig/Sauer USA about what we had learned and to the S&W Academy because they had a DA/SA 9mm with the same issues. Both responded favourably, telling me that they had had similar reports from other sources.

I sent copies of these letters to the Chief Firearms Instructor at the rcmp Depot in Regina thinking they might be interested. They were .....

My ex was a civilian employee of the rcmp at the time. Her first job with them was as Registrar of Firearms. Remember those days? She asked if I had recently trained any rcmp members. I replied in the affirmative as we had a few of them shooting in IPSC with us. She then said that the NCO/IC of the Coquitlam Detachment (not Chiliwack) wanted me to come in for an "interview".

I told her about the letters and the responses I got back. She asked for copies of the letters and told me NOT to come in until she got back to me. That settled the matter and I was not summoned for an "interview".

Ah, memories of the "good old days" ....

Happy New Year!

The rcmp has never had a Sig pistol as general issue. Never. ERT has been issued them, but that is pretty much it - plus the odd PDS officer. The day they took our revolvers they issued us 5946's.

For some "back in the day" reading, you might enjoy this Mar/April issue of American Handgunner. (PDF download) On pg. 37 is "Guns of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police" which concludes with comments from RCMP Training Officer, Sgt. Bill Robertson, and pics of his "fast draw" of the Model 10 from the issue RCMP holster(!)

I wonder if this is still RCMP policy:
The only thing that justifies a Peace Officer to shoot another Human Being is the Overwhelming need to· cause that person to immediately cease what he is doing. The need must be so great that it does not matter if the person dies as a result of being stopped

I think now a day with police officer, it is the need for them to go home safe and sound at the end of the shift THAT decide above all else whether they shoot or not.

I don't give a rats' ass if the Sig was never a general issue handgun for the rcmp. I'm telling you that is what the members showed up with that day.

The real point of the story was the attitude of the rcmp about a mere civilian having the temerity to train rcmp members.

RCMP ERT and K9 country wide are issued the P226 DAK in 9mm. The old DA/SA P226's are long gone, the old ERT guys who had them were allowed to keep them but then in later years they were getting them taken when they sent them in for Servicing....getting a S&W 5946 back! = not happy old ERT members.
Now we have the Air Marshall program using the Glock 19. Wonder what they will buy to replace the 5946.....it's been talked about for years now.

One too many Whiskeys last night ? I remember the S&W pistols the RCMP had or have from many years ago . I saw one at a range . it was stainless steel and in 9mm and it had the RCMP logo on the side and it was double action only . and the guy who it was issued to well lets just say that he's okay in my books . good attitude .

I don't drink. I just hate being challenged when I'm reporting a factual incident.

Looks like the members in question accessed a couple of guns they may not have been authorized to.

From the level of their performance, they were ahead of the herd as a result of the training. Hopefully it did them some good and didn't get them in sh!t with their superiors.

There is only one poster who got his panties in a knot. Who got all uppity when someone posted a straightforward fact about issue pistols.

Wish my department would allow me to use my duty firearm for IPSC....
The mags that the officer had, were they 10 round or standard capacity? Currently, members where I work are using personal firearms for such competition shooting, unless its strictly training and technically still considered part of their duties. This could explain why they had sigs? Just a thought...

I’m not trying to be a jerk but maybe get the facts right and you won’t get challenged.

And what facts would those be? The members showed up with two Sig Sauer P226 pistols.

Whether or not they were standard issue or not is irrelevant.

As I recall, they were standard capacity magazines. This before we were restricted to 10 rds max.

I used to enjoy my 9mm Brownings with 14 rd mags plus 1 up the spout. Used to rot the socks of the 1911 guys with their 7 rd mags. Yes, they was a time 8 rd 1911 mags were unheard of.

They used to throw in mandatory mag changes in a short CoF just to level the playing field.

We let LEOs use their high cap mags IF they show up in uniform with their duty gun. Otherwise, the 10 rd rule applies. I'm not sure if this applies at IPSC Qualifiers.

Hey folks. Did the RCMP ever consider and experiment with pilot program issuing S&W Model 581 for evaluation? Most likely late1980s(?) A friend's friend said another detachment member carried one for a few years in Nova Scotia. The other members all had Model 10s so this was unusual.

Curious if it's a fact or otherwise.
