I just visited my local range to give my new pistol a spin. The range owner told me that they will be installing a swipe card check-in system at the range. He also said that the RCMP would be tied in to the system to see who used the range. Is this normal?

That's BS. Doesn't happen my man. I know every technical guy in the RCMP, they do not engage with private enterprises.

Not as far as I know,....this is not normal. Most places have a sign in sheet, and some just want your member number. But sharing this info with anyone just for ####s and giggles is not right.

I doubt it, that sound like a breach of privacy to me. besides, the Registry and the ATTs ensure the RCMP know where every gun in Canada is at all times right?

Maybe the RCMP are "tied" into it so they can USE the range, IE they have a universal card or something.

Swipe and play

My Range had discussed a simillar system, but only to gain access to range to keep the destructive range wreckers at bay,I suppose as with any electronic system it could be accessed by CFO's and RCMP alike (Not liking the thought of that)Very!!big brotherish. I wonder as a member and user of a range if there is any expectation of privacy by range mandate or by law?

"The range owner"

Key MF'n words.

Don't like it? Shoot somewhere else.

Something was said along the lines of "There's way more ATT's than users at the range". It sounded like the RCMP thought that lots of people were just taking their pistols out in the bush instead of going to the range. They may want to see who has a membership but never goes, or something like that. The whole thing makes no sense to me. I would like a key card check in, instead of signing a book, but don't like the idea of the RCMP being able to track who goes in and out.

Our range has a sign in and out policy. It's a requirement of our club's liability insurance. I would assume the RCMP have more important business, within their budget, than snooping around gun clubs.

Range owner - you mean club, right? It isn't presently legal to operate a "for profit" range in BC, hasn't been for years.

can you direct me to some legislation? i am curious about this

the kfgc has this same setup i like it much more and the range use has been cut in half (alot of people would use it even if there membership was void)

Phoenix has that here in edmonton, you just swipe when you come in there incase the rcmp needs proof that you did infact go to the range, say if you were pulled over and they found out you had a restricted firearm

A swipe system can store all the access records but the only way that the RCMP should be able to get that info is with a warrant.

Somethign doesn't add up.

Exactly, a warrant would be required to access that info, which means that a Justice would have to be convinced that something specifically wrong would be found first. Bull.

You might find that a provincial firearms officer would monitor such information, just to see if people are legitimate shooters; otherwise I doubt if they would bother with trivial data collection. If you don't meet minimum range time, it could one day be used to refuse a permit to transport though.

Maybe someone can correct if im wrong but I was told when i joined CTM 3 years ago that the range cameras were linked to the RCMP . That was before law 9 or Dawson .

The range I use (Saskatoon Wildlife Federation) has used swipe card access control for several years. It's tied in to the computers used by the club's office staff so in theory it could be keeping a record of each card's use which could be interpreted as a user history. And then it becomes possible that information could be given to the police if they asked, (or with a warrant, demanded.) As things are at the moment, I don't think any police around here would have the time or inclination to monitor it automatically or routinely.
