RCMP Pistol Trials

From what I have heard likely near zero. S&W apparently bought back all the revolvers and offered a very sweet deal to include parts and warranty service if the RCMP would continue to use S&W products.

So RCMP use M&P in which caliber?

I have not been able to shoot very well with a S&W M&P.

I sure hope that the LO's that have to use this potentially to protect themselves have a better experience with this firearm!

Have you tried a 5946?
As long as they don't increase the trigger weight on the M&P, it'll still be miles better than their old gun, creep and all!

It isn't you.

RCMP are switching to the M&P?

No. Still using the 5946. Lots of rumors during the last 10 years, but nothing lately. They just spent $100 000's on new duty and plain clothes holster for the 5946 so I doubt we're switching in the near future. I'm a firearm instructor with the RCMP so I would like to think I'm in the know.

Use of Force branch and CAPS (same group that evaluated and selected the Colt patrol carbines) are evaluating new sidearms now. No selections have been made but will likely be a striker fired pistol, 9mm is a given. I shoot IDPA with the Director of the program so I like to think that I am in the know.

Air Marshall program have already selected Glock 19's as their conceal carry sidearm.

I'm sure they are and I'm aware of the Glocks but I'm not holding my breath. Like I said, for literally over 10 years I've heard that trials were being conducted, the armorers were out of 5946 parts, they were down to the final two, they had made a decision, we weren't looking anymore, S&W were making new parts just for the RCMP, etc...and now they have just dumped a bunch of money for new holster and new training. We'll see what happens.

I can not to this day understand the whole 'New York trigger'/ DAO mentality the RCMP has. I know the idea is a very deliberate trigger pull, prevent ND's yadayada; if an army private making less than 50k a year, who requires only grade ten, can be trusted with 6.5 lb triggers in AR's, then why cant the federal police force trust its well trained, highly paid, generally well educated officers with more suited trigger pull weights? Seriously, i feel that the torque put into someones hand to pul on a 14 pound trigger would be enough to throw a shot, especially on smaller stature personnel lacking grip strength. just my 2 cent opinion.

They didn't buy very many revolvers back. When I was in training at Depot, I asked one of the fellows who worked in stores what he was doing that day. His reply: "We are busy putting revolvers into barrels and getting them ready to ship to IPSCO". IPSCO is the steel mill at the north side of Regina.

I liked the 5946. It was a good solid sidearm. Some of the people could shoot very nice targets with them. I shot mine a fair bit and got to be quite comfortable with it. Some of the ditzier members couldn't figure out how to clean them properly and the firing pin would seize up, more from exposure to moisture and the fact that they were different metal than the part that surrounded them.

The government of the day could take pride in the fact that they melted down thousands of nice revolvers. Even at $100 apiece, they could have sold them and given the money to a good cause. Oh no, we'll "keep these off the streets".

It's not just the RCMP but pretty much every police force. Police officers often have to hold suspects at gun point and like you said,
you want a deliberate, conscious trigger pull not nervous jitters to fire your pistol. The RCMP 5946 pistols have a trigger pull between 8-12 Lbs.

Rumors. When I was at Depot, we issued the 5946's. Some of the cadets were half trained with revolvers, but were issued the new ones. I was at a gun shop in Regina one day and some expert at the counter was loudly claiming that the cops didn't have their new guns, that they were held up at the border. In a quiet voice, I said, " That's odd, I have one." Dead silence.

I remember someone in firearms telling us there was the beretta and a crappy ruger? pistol in the competition. But that is just second hand heresay.

And the last rumor I heard was that they were down to the Sig and M&P. Goes to show.

I don't know what all the hate is about for the 5946. Name one semi auto 9mm that can be used as an impromptu boat anchor. That sort of versatility is invaluable to LEO
