RCMP Rifle Rest

... Quite possibly used in Competition, and if so, more than likely the Initials are those of the original "User". ... 'Just a guess on my part . ..... David K

They were listed in PH and AJ Parker catalogues. they were used not as a shooting aid which was prohibited but to keep the rifle from contacting the ground.

The rest is really just a tool to hold a rifle up off the wet grass between relays, and between shots on the firing point. They are usually attached to the shooter's mat or box with a string to prevent loss by forgetfulness.

HAH is of course a joke in short form.

Target rifles are shot prone, with a s;ling to make rifle steady. 3 shooters would shoot at the same target, taking turns. In a 15 or 20 shot match, you would be holding the rifle for a long time. The rest was used to hold the rifle, between shots.

You did not take your arm out of the sling, but just swung the rifle over a bit and rested it in the rest, or had the rest closer, and rested the back of your hand or arm on it, between shots.
