I've inherited my GREAT granddad's old 12 guage SxS, my dad who had it before me was told that the barrels were shot out.

I am considering getting new barrels for it, if that's even possible, which is why I'm posting here.

Is it possible/practical to look at re-barreling a SxS that's 50+ years old.

Sorry no pictures right now.

Thanks for your input.

Yes its called re-sleeving. In the process the old barrels are cut off and new barrel tube are fitted. It's an expensive process but cheaper than making totally new barrels. However do you need new barrels a good DB barrel maker can do a lot to save an old gun. Dents can rised, pits can be bored out, action barrel fit can be tightened, etc. Their are a number of people in Canada who can do this work, but as I have not used any I can not give a recommendation.

The cost will be several hundred dollars to recondition barrels with dent raising, polish inside and out and re-blacking. That may be an affordable way to go.
New barrel sleeves, fitted & finished will cost in the neighbourhood of $2000 or so. You'd need to be restoring a very valuable double gun to justify putting new barrels on it.

I have never seen shot out 12 ga shot barrels?????
Seen lots with dints , rust, pittes from blk. power , etc.
what do they look like and what is the make model of gun?
am old begium no name would be cheaper to replace - Yes I know
it is grandfathers- but-

Thanks everyone,

That's the kind of information I'm looking for.

"Shot out" may have been the wrong choice of words. My dad was basically told not to use the gun as the barrels were weak and dangerous.

There isn't anything terribly special about the gun, except it's "in the family", if the cost WAY outstrips a decent used SxS I'd just make it a wall hanger and get the used.

I just like hunting with a classic SxS, they're ###Y! lol

Damascus barrels? Many are shootable (black powder only) but you need to have them examined by a real expert.

Can you provide more info on your gun and/or some photos? There's a wide quality/price range of these guns ranging from worthless to "best".

I don't have the gun in my hands right now, it's still at my parents. When I do I'll take some pics and post them.

Probably closer to the worthless side of the scale.

My great grandfather's single shot 12 is shot out.

OK, I grabbed some photo's of the shotgun; I'll post them soon.

It has the marking Belgium and W. Richards on it.

My mother also mentioned that dad had the gun "cleaned up", but couldn't elaborate on what was involved. Although I suspect that included work on the butt and stock since they seem in particularly nice shape.

I've done some poking around and found that the Belgian made W. Richards aren't much more than cheap knock offs.

Based on that I think I'll just spend the money on a good used SxS and make my great grand dad's into a wall hanger. Which I'm fine with, I was really just looking for a decent SxS to use for hunting.

I have had a couple of these over the years, generaly they
are not laminated barrels, average quality- not worth spending
much money on, thou could be a shooter If you had it cheched out.
As far as a shooter you would be better of with one of the sxs
that TEC ( look up at the banners^) cheap and usable, then when
you get hooked on sxs, you can spend mocho $$$$$$$$$$
for a high end one:p
P.S. mainy of these 1920"s guns had short chambers in them also
Marshall

Oh, it's not a matter of being hooked :) it's just a matter of the mocho $$$.

I'm not up much on the better makers of shotguns, what can I look for when checking out some of the used guns?

Thanks
