Are barrels available?

Do they have to be imported?

Can they be gotten(?) in 7.62/.308?

What is a sensible cost for rebarreling this type of action?

Does anyone know a 'smith in Alberta who is familiar with Springfields and can do the work?

Hey bud
If you're talking about original barrels still in wrap they are out there but you have to invest a lot of time and effort to find them Since ebay closed down on firearms parts its been quite hard.

Otherwise sporter barrels are still quite popular for these actions especially in light deer calibres (ie 257 Roberts).

Anything more than .30-06 Springfield and I think you're asking for trouble (but thats my opinion).

Cheers
Richard

PS: Looks like I outrank you in CGN seniority by ONE WHOLE MONTH!

Bite your tongue....Did you just say 'sporterize' a excellent condition '03 with a pooched barrel??

It has to be original exterior dimensions.

Apparently this rifle was one of the 'blank shooters' for years and has a bore that, well, looks like a sewer pipe.

I have a sportered Rock island Arsenal '03 that needs a new barrel. Where can i get one? I want to stick with 30-06.
if you know of any i would like to know so i can see about budgeting for one.
Do you guys know how hard it woudl be to change out? Can i do it at home or should a smith do it?
thanks

numrich has replacement barrels for $200. They will export if you get the import certificate etc.

This is an '03, not an 03A3? The '03 barrel has provision for the rear sight incorporated on the barrel, so an '03A3 barrel won't work on an '03. A3 barrels are easier to find. Costs for original replacement barrels have increased substantially in the US. An '03 with an excellent exterior would be worth rebarrelling though. The actual barrel exchange should be no more difficult than on any other bolt action rifle.

I always wanted to take and old milsurp and have a match barrel turned to the proper profile and finished to match......... :)

I know a chap who has a Long Branch fitted with a quality barrel chambered for .30/.303. So the wide variety of match bullets could be used. Even milled in the bayonet lugs. If the rifle has full length handguards, you don't have to be too fussy about duplicating the original contour exactly.
