Re barrel a BLR ?

Does anyone know if this has been done to a BLR? I am curious if I bought one if I could get a 24" barrel put onto the reciever with maybe a little thicker o.d. as well.
 
I am also interested in this. I did read a piece once that the writer did rebarrel an older one, and it showed a picture of a first generation BLR. I beleive that if the BLR is of the right vintage with a steel receiver it can be done. We will have to wait for a gunsmith to reply.
 
I have not done any but as far as I know you can rebarrel them. You can't make the barrel much larger at the action but the rest of the contour could be increased. I would estimate a custom barreling job would be a minimum of $650.

I think the only "disposable" rifle that you can not rebarrel is the Remington 710, but then it so inexpensive why would you.

Is the new BLR not made with an aluminum receiver and do the locking lugs not engage the end of the barrel.
I know that machining can be done to make this work but is it worth the cost?

I haven't seen an aluminum one but you are correct - the cost would be high....

When the "new and improved" Lightening models (meaning "crappier") were brought out a few years ago, the Canadian Tire on the south end of MacLeod Trail in Calgary was blowing out all their new "older" ones for $450 apiece.

I was all over that...

Anyways, my wife needed a first hunting rifle, so the natural thing was to take one of those rifles, remove the .308 Win barrel (not a shot fired through it), and have Bill Leeper rebarrel in .358 Winchester.

My wife loves it, works great... of course, the next year Browning brought back the .358 - but in the "new and improved" rifles which I don't like.

Works for me, and Bill didn't seem to have any particular problem in doing his usual fine work.

BTW, I do have a new BLR Model 81 barrel here in .308 Winchester that has never had a shot fired through it...
