Re-barrel to 7 STW or 300 Win Mag??

Na...it's a pussycat.
Dan, when I say 2900+ I'm talking just breaking 2900. 225s went 3100 no problem. I had no trouble getting 3000+ with my 338-378 and 250s. 3450 with the 210 TSX. Bit hard on Deer.

+1. Some Wby chamberings use a LOT of freebore (up to 3/4" in some of the old ones, less in newer guns). I've always been able to find a load that worked for hunting in all the Wby chambered rifles I've owned, but I wouldn't take one to the next BR match. - dan

With this free bore that the Wby's have or should maybe have, does this really affect the accuracy of the rifle?? I would like to keep it a M.O.M (minute of moose:p) gun out to 500yds or so. I have shot my 375 Ruger and H&H around a inch at 100yds at have shot it out to 375yds and keep groups just around 4". So can this be expected from this 340 if I do my part?? Would like to be able to group 6" or less at 500yds- again if I do my part. Scope on the gun will be a VXIII 4.5-14 BTW.

As to the recoil levels, I guess it depends on your tolerance. I don't find it that bad, but some friends who have shot the gun complained a lot. Stock design will make a big difference to the felt recoil, so as long as you plan for that and build according to your size and shape, you shouldn't have any real issues. But it's not a 30-06 and never will be. - dan

Thanks for the replies again fella's. My main purpose with this future build is to have a rifle that weighs around 8-8.5lbs with a barrel short enough to keep it handy in the field, but keep velocity loss to a minimum. The ultimate goal here is to be able to hammer a moose sized game at 500yds or less, and be able to practice with it, without rattling my teeth loose. So I hope the 340 won't be to violent to shoot. Thanks again.....Scott

The 340 will do that with enthusiasm.

If you are comfortable with 375H&H recoil you will be fine with the 340.

I tend to like the balance and reduced muzzle blast of a 26 inch barrel.
I don't mind the length even when hunting on the wet coast rain jungle :D
Oddly enough some of the great turn of the century rifles had very long barrels...Those rifles are amazing to shoot offhand.
I am of the mind that a little extra barrel length is not necessarily a bad thing...Others hate long barrels..Go figure!

Barrel length is a personal thing to each hunter.
If you start at 26" you can always cut it back.

Hello,

I'm thinking of re-barreling my .257 Weatherby Magnum. I spoke to Pacific tool and gauge they sent me a drawing for .257 Weatherby Mag Match, they want me to specify more chamber dimensions before they put the reamer into production. Any takers or advise on this one ?? iam looking for the best groups at 100 meters
