Re-Barreling SKS possible

What if you raise the magazine up higher so that the rounds are closer to chamber? Or could you modify the actual SKS magazine? Final idea would be to lengthen the reciever but that is a big job.

Your issue sounds like the basic flaw in the SKS-D as well with the mag sitting too low.

If I raise the magazine up I lose the lower rails for guiding the bolt and also lose the ejector. The only way to make it work is to lengthen the receiver about 3/4" and make a proper Swiss Arms style feed ramp right in front of the magazine; if one does that the cost and time will be such that you might as well just buy an AR180B... and also will need to make a new bolt from scratch. I also thought of angling the magazine back to improve the feeding, but then the bolt will not strip rounds off the magazine. Was an intersting project and myself and my buddy learned a lot! Got a nice collection of spare SKS parts now!

It can be done but the rounds still will not feed properly... the 556 is just too skinny! The short squat M43 round feeds wonderfully, the 556 needs that 3/4" or so of space to enter the chamber properly.

marstar once brot in SKS in 5.56 but it was never popular , i wonder if that was the problem .

The gun is being converted back to 7.62x39mm and being rebuilt as a D model since the bolt is already thinned and the rails have been relieved, so its not a total loss.

6.8 is a bit exotic for me, the 556 was a nice idea as I have other rifles in that chambering and lots of brass for reloading.

to a "D" , what a shame . could you not just use it as a single shot 5.56 ?
