Does anyone know who I might approach to ask about re-chambering a .308WIN barrel to 30.06 for a Savage build I am looking at?

It's easier to source .308 barrels than 30.06, though there are shoulder differences in the cartridges.

Any thoughts, or ideas would be appreciated, even if it's just where to source a heavier barrel in 30.06.

The forward part of the .308 case is considerably larger in diameter than the 30-06 case... probably 1/2 of the 308 chamber will have to be cut off, the barrel re threaded and then chambered for the 30-06 to get a 'clean' chamber.

It would be necessary to pick up the existing threads, and run them further up the barrel.
Certainly a do-able conversion, but don't know if it would be cost effective.

If some is cut off it will need rethreading.

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish exactly but there's probably a 30'06 improved case that's blown out pretty much straight that would clean out the 308 chamber.
My personal thought is that 30'06 and 308 are similar enough to not be worth the bother.

That's what I'm thinking. .308WIN barrels are abundant and cheap, but the more I look at it, there likely isn't a lot of cost savings vs. buying new.

Anyone know what the cost would likely be?

You could rechamber it to 7.5X55, but again to what end, for perhaps 100 fps?

I have read about rechambering to 30.06 Ackley Improved, but I'm not really into the wildcat cartridges and having to do my own work ups on a load for it. Not for this build, anyway. I'd like to keep the clambering to shoot commercial, or NATO cartridges, in a worst case scenario.

Mission for this build is to push a 208gr A-Max out past 2700fps for 1000m shots, or as a medium duty hunting rig, should the mood strike me.

This would be my first look at building a bolt gun. The rifle came from my late Father in Law and the dies and brass came from my mother's late husband.

Bit of a legacy build to give new life to some old kit.

I'm stupid sentimental like that.

Talk to Ryan at IBI barrels in Chilliwack bc....he'll take care of your needs.
Premium barrels made right here in Canada.

The 7.5X55 is not a wildcat. It's essentially the wildcat 30-284, but in factory form.

There is plenty of load data, inexpensive dies, and readily available brass that does not need to be fireformed. Case capacity approximates the 30-06. A reamer will clean up the 308 chamber and you will not need to set back the barrel.

Although now that you've stated 2700+ fps with a 208 gr bullet, you're looking beyond a 30-06 class cartridge, probably a 300 Win Mag which can do that comfortably.
