I have a few 6.5's and want to re-chamber to 6.5 Rem Mag. I found some brass & dies & 3 boxes of Rem factory shells which takes me to 110 pieces.I was talking to the local smith about it, but he doesn't have a reamer. He does however have one in 6.5-06. i thought it might be a bit long for the 96 but recently saw some 96's in 30-06 on the T.E.C. website. I shoot 85 grainers right now for yotes but would like to reach a little further. Any suggestions? how much does a reamer cost anyway? Please help.

I was under the impression that the 96 action was weaker and had fewer safety features than the 98 action.
Did you ask your gunsmith if it is safe to use such a powerful chambering in old '96 action? Even seeing those 8mm sporter conversions made me raise my eyebrows.

I`d go 6.5 Arch. Toss in a 6.5x55 drop the hammer and you have a perfect fire formed Arch :)
I owned an Arch for a while.
It was a super accurate rigwith 107's or 140 match kings.
I wouldn't do a '96 up in 6.5Mag however. I love both the '96 and the 6.5 caliber but even I'M not that crazy to put a belted 6.5 mag and a Swede together!!:D

I barreled a Swede to .243 Winchester for a customer... I advised against it .. he said he would load lighter loads... then he came back complaining about hard extraction... I told him he would have to load even lighter loads...

it may be a tough little action but there is a reason you shouldn't chamber it for more modern, higher pressure cartridges... it won't handle them...

I have swedes in at least 10 different chamberings. One is 6.5/284. It is a super accurate rifle which one of my grandsons uses as a deer/coyote gun. It is a 1902 mfg. reciever.(went and looked) They have no 3rd lug, but I have never seen a mauser that the 2 front lugs sheered off to cause the 3rd lug to bear.I think the biggest trouble you will have is getting the original barrel off without damaging something. I prefer these to any mauser for short cart. as they are 'better looking' with the small ring and small shroud. I have looked at the arch and think it would be good as well, although custom dies may be needed. These are my opinions only and shouldn't be taken as advice. Mark

don't mess with perfection! An ackley improved might be an option on a 1940s husky but you'll miss the 100% reliable feeding you have now.

thanks for the response guys, i don't have any info on 6.5-284 or 6.5 A.I. but i looked up the pressures on 6.5-06 and 6.5 Rem mag, both are at 60,000 and the 6.5 swede at only 50,000. i know the local smith suggested the 6.5-06 but maybe it's just cause he has that reamer. i certainly don't want to go to a dangerous cartridge for my gun as far as pressures go, and i don't want a cartridge that will be hard to get dies and brass either.Wholesale took 2 freakin months to get the 85 grain bullets i ordered last time. Any more advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Go 6.5x55 Ackley Improved (40º) if you want a bit more velocity without stressing that Swede action. May need some feed mods, but is a sweet little round. Regards, Eagleye.
