Who has experience re-finishing 858 mags?

My 858 is in queue to get Tennifered by Rauch, and I'd like to re finish the mags as well.

I hate the glossy grey finish from the factory, and am hoping some CGN'ers have experience in various coatings. I'm open to anything from Krylon to Arma-Coat.

I anodized mine at work. They look amazing in the rifle, a near perfect match.

If you can find someone to do it, DO IT!

Do not PM me, I WILL NOT ANODIZE YOUR MAGS!

I got Murdoc to do mine and they look great! Definitely drop him a PM. He parked mine first then painted them with a ceramic type based paint. After almost 500 rounds they still look mint.

I found access to a sandblasting hood. So my intent is to duracoat the mags after sandblasting or simply spray a matte black anti-rust paint.

But the difficulty I encountered is how to remove completely the follower and spring ?
I can't seem to make it go past the rivet.

wont go past the rivet? that seems to explain itself i would think. boys be careful what you mention here about "changing" certain parts of a magazine so you can refinish it properly they just love to be sneaky and fish for admissions...

You have to remove the rivet. Some will claim this is illegal. I disagree, but I'm not a lawyer.

If you want to be extra careful, remove the bottom plate before you drill out the rivet. Then rivet it before installing the base plate. That way you never have an assembled magazine that holds more than 5 rounds.

X2 Can't be too careful considering the possible consequences...####

I got a mag from a dealer that holds more than 5. Nice to have some spare parts I guess...:mad:

I used Arma Coat on mine, gave them a lite sanding with 600grit , then a wash with laquer thinner, then sprayed with an Airbrush with Matte Black Arma coat.

Turned out very nice, I did not dismantle the mag before, applying the arma coat.

Arma coat goes on as a very thin coating so there was no effect on function of mag.

HTH,

Nigel

Can you at least tell us which type of anodizing you did? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a Type III & a Type IV?
I'd definitely want to do this myself, and want to make sure I get the right type of anodize. Your mags look freakin' amazing.

I don't suppose you leave your doors unlocked when not home, do you? :D

I used the basic anodizing, I believe that is Type I. There is no reason you can't do it at home. Read up on it, its so easy to do you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

Our set up at work is by no means fancy. It's plastic totes with chemical in them, a battery charger, and those turkey deep fryers for heating the solutions.

I'll look into it. Thanks for responding! ;)

What is the best way to strip off the paint so the mags are fresh for the chemical bath??

I got 20 mags to do.
Sand blast. Nothing else will take the paint off. We tried gun wash, acetone, and an acid bath used to strip anodizing. nothing took the paint off except sand blasting.

Did you try any other media? Such as baking soda, which is amazing for detail blasting and very fine cleaning. It can be a real pain to clean out of tight spaces... especially in carburetors. You can remove the labeling from a pop can, while leaving the can in excellent, but stripped condition.

What size of sand did you use? The silica sand I'm used to is pretty coarse and would sure make a mess out of an aluminum magazine... Glass bead would probably also do a nice job.
