Re-finishing 858 mags

Sand blast. Nothing else will take the paint off. We tried gun wash, acetone, and an acid bath used to strip anodizing. nothing took the paint off except sand blasting.

Sand blast is the best surface prep prior to anodize anyways and is what gives the matte finish.

What about methylene chloride?

In my experience that is a piss poor paint stripper. I soaked an Aluminum 10/22 receiver for about 10 days before I wrote it off as useless. Even using a wire brush and electric tools the s**t was no help. I now have a half stripped receiver I need to finish one of these days...

The Aluminum receivers are/were painted. I was stripping mine because the paint began flaking off within the first 100 rounds. Fixing it myself was easier than dealing with warranty. Or so I thought... I had a thread in the gunsmithing forum. Many others had the same problem with the newer 10/22s.

Interesting. Did you use MC based stripper or straight MC? I have yet to see MC defeated on paint, it even work on powder coating.

I used a steel can containing "Methylene Chloride" I can't offer much info beyond that. I used all of the can last year trying to strip the receiver. I had planned to use "aircraft" paint stripper as suggested in my thread but have yet to get around to it.

Did you try any other media? Such as baking soda, which is amazing for detail blasting and very fine cleaning. It can be a real pain to clean out of tight spaces... especially in carburetors. You can remove the labeling from a pop can, while leaving the can in excellent, but stripped condition.

What size of sand did you use? The silica sand I'm used to is pretty coarse and would sure make a mess out of an aluminum magazine... Glass bead would probably also do a nice job.
The paint is tough, you need to use sand. This isn't a fine detail job, you really have to work at it to get that bake-on paint off.

I'm not sure what grain sand I used, I just used what was in the machine and kept the pressure as low as I could to prevent damaging the mags. The ribs should prevent any warping, they are pretty sturdy.

peter2772000 We are currently coating our shop floors at the moment, we should be finished by the weekend, and then I will get the anodizing set up soon. I will post some pics when ready.

Why on earth did CZ make these stupid things grey?.Well it doesnt matter for me anyway as a friend lost three out of my four mags in a lake a few weeks back anyways..arggghhh...(they were not loaded at least). Dont get me wrong, i like the rifle but it just looks like sh!t in its stock configuration. Eventually if i can find some "plastic" furniure and some mags i will have the barrel treatment done as well.

Great. Lemme know when you're ready and approx. price please! ;)
