I have a nice m1 Garand, the only problem with it has been that it has a non matching rear handguard.
I recently came across a bunch of usgi new parts including the correct walnut handguard. It appears to be never mounted but the finish on it is a bit odd, almost like a wax or something.
My question is my current stock is finished with an oil(i think) how to I finish the handguard to match(ie what type of oil is rubbed in)
This was a while ago but i thought the previous owner said he stripped and ironed? the stock and re oiled it? Does that sound right. I notice the stock has the ser num stamped into it, and the proof p on the stock. What does all this mean?
Thx for your help

When you say "new" do you mean "new to you"?
If so the waxy finish on your wood may just be years and years of oil and grease. try scrubbing with a nylon brush/ stiff sponge in hot dish-soapy water (you can use the bath) and see what you get. You can also run it through the dishwasher. Once you've got the oil/grease/wax/dirt off you can re-finish with Boiled Linseed oil, which you can usually get from the same section as acetone, paint thinner etc at your hardware store.

I could be wrong here, but the previous owner might have meant that he stripped the old finish then ironed the stock to raise some of the bumps and gouges out. It's a woodworker's trick.

The P on the stock means the rifle - or the stock anyway- was rebuilt at a certain amoury. If google it you will find sites that have reams of info on what mark means what.
Have fun.

BTW, this question would have been better in the Milsurp forum ;)
