Re-forming Brass .308/7-08

I am thinking of getting a 7mm-08 and am wondering if .308 brass can be necked down for safe use. I have never done this before so replies can safely assume "I know nothing". First, can it be done .... ie. ... is the cartridge shape / shoulder fit compatable? Second, if possible ... what is the proper procedure?

Yes, both cases are identical except for the neck diameter.


The procedure is simple. Lube your 308 cases and run then through a 7mm-08 sizing die. Check the case for over-all length and trim to minimum length if required.
 
Yes this is how I did mine as well, I used a generous amount of RCBs lube. The .308 to .284 is not a big step down. You will need to trim a few thous off however.
Make sure your dies are down all the way I over pressed mine just to make sure.
One more hint cause it happened to me,
Dont go fast or you will preasuer dent the crap out of your brass cause of all the lube.

Yes, you can resize .308 brass to 7mm-08 quite successfully. I'd suggest that you watch the case neck thickness closely. You can check this easily by seating a bullet in a newly (down)sized case and measure the overall neck thickness to ensure it's within spec. Turning the formed case necks is a solution to overly thick necks, and you'll have the added benefit of having uniform necks.
 
I have to agree with gth and oaktree. If you do this consider turning the necks. Before you do that consider buying a bag or two of 7-08 Brass. It's not big bucks and you'll have to correct head stamp on your cartridges.
 
Just went the other wat a necked down some 308 win (norma brass) down to 260 rem. No problems. A bullet will just fit into a fired case so neck's are OK. Didn't work so well with fired remmy brass.

Don't think you could close the bolt on a 308 round into a 7-08 chamber easily.
