I have 4 sealed, and 1 open 90 round box of IVI 5.56 ammo dated 1971, laquered sealed, crimped primer pockets.
The boxes are very simular looking to the 303 48rd boxes, there 5 layers of 18 rds per layer separated by cardboard sleeves .
If anyone has any information regarding this ammo, it would be greatly appreciated.

Development Test / Operation Test I ends for the SAW candidates. In addition to the three 6mm SAW prototypes, three 5.56mm LMGs have been tested: a Colt M16 HBAR, the FN Minimi, and the HK 23A1. A standard M16A1 was used as the control. The Colt HBAR didn’t make the cut due to its mere 30 round magazine. The decision to drop the HK 23A1 for safety reasons was particularly controversial. First, the HK entry suffered numerous problems due to the experimental XM287/XM288 cartridges. The lot of IVI ammo used possessed thinner case walls than the usual M193/M196 cartridges.

Thank you for the information, I thought that the ammo was produced for the US Military, but I thought it was for Vietnam war supply.
Prior to getting this ammo, I've always thought IVI didn't start producing 5.56 ammo until the C7 era.
 
Its a 55 grain bullet instead of the standard 62 grain steel core they have made forever.
If you look carefully at the bottom of the box it is embossed with something like canadian pattern type 1 mk 1*

Even the paper dividers look like they were cut from scraps on a large paper shear. Interesting stuff and it shoots well.
I grabbed a few boxes from Epp's.
 
I started a thread about same ammo about 5 years ago. According to guys here then it was made for USA govt and one guys uncle remembered it from Vietnam
