OK hope theres some gunsmiths here :D

I have an idea and want feed back from guys who reline Gun barrels.

I am buying a revolver Barrel liner its 5/8 outside dia .454 inside dia.
The revolver has a 6 in tapered barrel 45 caliber old style .454 dia bore.

I was gona buy a tapered pin reamer a no 8 is perfect run that from the forceing cone end thru to the muzzel.
A no 8 tapered reamer is .5050 at the big end .3971 at the small end and the cuting edge is 5 in 3/16th long

Now take the barrel liner and cut it to the same taper on its outside in the lathe.
I measured everything the liner will go in then press tight then cut the forceing cone and do the crown.
We are thinking me and my gunsmith that this will be strong and the liner cant go forward cause of the taper.
Good Idea or Bad idea.:D
Its less work than useing a step drill with a guide as the barrel is quite thin at the front.
so the other way is drill down the bore once with a small drill for the front then a bigger one from the back half way down creating a shoulder the liner will stop at.
Anyway Thats the plan My concern with the taper pin reamer is theres no guide to guide it strait But my smith says it will follow the bore no worries.
Sound good???

Sounds like a lot of buggering round to me. As long as you have .030 - .040" wall thickness left on the original barrel, after drilling, it seems a lot easier to to make a pilot drill and drill the barrel out and solder the liner in. On a rifle barrel I would be more inclined to lok tite it in.
Turning a perfect taper (that duplicates the reamer) is pretty challenging and it is far easier to make a pilot drill. I made a series of 2 recently for a .22 rifle and didn't even have to change the sights (to my surprise).

cheers mooncoon

I would drill it out and machine a small step, turn the liner so you can slip it in place by hand and install it using Permanent Loctite made for joining cylindrical surfaces. Make the length a bit long on each end and finish machining it when the Loctite sets up over night.

Ok that does sound easyier. I will discuss it more with the guy whos gona do it. we talked about it today and the reamer idea was more to do with strengh than anything else. + the barrel is very thin at the front. but that could be delt with a thiner step drill and then a bigger one from the forceing cone end which would creat a shoulder for the linner.
Thanks for the tips.
