re: "sniper rifles"

Ach, Timothy Murphy is ultimately responsible for all this nonsense.
The Kentucky rifle was the original "sniper rifle":p

So I just built a rifle to shoot these little buggers:

While I'll probably never make it to New Zealand I someday hope to. So it's a rifle for shooting "snipes" what should I call it? Hmm how about a Sniper rifle?

That's where the term originally came from guys. Marksman capable of shooting those little birds. Guess it sounds cooler than Gopherer.

I can't wait to go shoot my 50BMG gopher rifle. :p

This is actually one of the most important threads that have appeared on the CGN precision forum in a long, long time.

Political correctness is one of the foundations stones of facism. ;)

Perhaps at first, but this has long since devolved into a back and forth between two sides who will not change their views no matter what is said. It has become pointless. However, this thread has inspired me to build a rifle to shoot snipes. Don't know if I'll ever get to use it for its stated purpose, but you never know...

Any rifle becomes a sniper rifle, but only when there's a professional sniper firing it.

A .50 cal pimped out Barrett (or whatever else) with a noob behind it is therefore NOT a sniper rifle. The very term "sniper" is a profession, not an inanimate object. Therefore, any rifle in any caliber belonging to a professional sniper is a sniper rifle! Likewise, any rifle in any caliber that does not belong to a sniper is NOT a sniper rifle. There's more to accurate shooting than proper equipment.

(please remember to inform Lieberals and Dippers of this whenever opportunity comes up)

Duh!

Nobody has a problem with calling Charles Whitman a sniper even though he was never paid for killing and injuring so many people.

i am tired of you guys whining about people asking questions about sniper rifles. whether you realize it or not sniper rifle is another term for tactical rifle.
also if you want to get technical most threads here are not for precision rifles.

i am sorry but most of the calibres mentioned are not precision cartridges they are either hunting or for lack of a better term they are target they are not match.

you want precision then shoot cartriges like 22 PPC, 6PPC, 6MM BR, 30 BR
etc.. the cartridges you guys talk about like 300 RUM, 338 LM, 50 BMG ETC.
are not precision cartridges. the matches they are designed for they are good. but try and shoot for group at 1000 yds and you will find they are not up to the task. i would love to see these cartridges shoot a 4" group at 1000
yards. they are meant to hit a target at that range not fire a group.

also for an example you call a REM 700 TACTICAL a precision rifle. tell me when it comes to looks what is the difference between this and US military sniper rifle models M24 or M40. these 2 rifles are more refined than a standard MODEL 700 you still try to emulate them but use the politically correct term precision rifle (maybe some of you are closet liberals). also look at the scopes you use. how many have mil dot reticles. is that not meant for a sniper rifle.

how about cutting these guys some slack and accept their questions gracefully and honestly and with good answers and no rebuke.

Hahahahahahahahahah!!!! I love this site.

A friend of mine was a scout sniper and ran a AI 50 in Iraq. That's exactly what they use.
iam not a newbie. i have been on this sight since 2005. i also have been shooting for 35 years.
as for sniper referring to military only have you not heard of sniper matches- targets shot at unknown distances?
as far as tactical rifles go the police are referred to as tactical teams and their tactical shooter is referred to as a sniper.

take a look at companies such as atrs or pgw that you guys rant and rave about. don't tell me the same rifles you buy from them aren't used by snipers-
military and police. when pgw stopped making hunting and target rifles who do you think they started making their products for?

as for what one member said about 338 LAPUA and 50 BMG not being sniper rounds guess again. our army uses pgw timberwolves (338 LAPUA) and i forget
what model McMILLAN in 50 BMG.that was the rifle that made the longest kill.

as for your bleeding heart liberals if they are worried about people getting killed why not get rid of booze and cars. more people die and more lives are ruined by these two than all firearms offenses combined. no matter how you sat it or put in print there is no way to avoid these people.

so quit the bickering among ourselves and give the lefties less ammo against us. this bickering is more ammo for them if we can't get along with each other
and just accept the fact we will never make them turn to our side.

Well, that took a while to read. Lots of interesting opinions here.
1. If the manufacturer refers to it's firearm as a "sniper rifle", is it only a sniper rifle if a sniper owns it?
2. If someone shoots another person with a Cooey .22 rifle from a concealed position, does that firearm become a sniper rifle?
It would seem that we are just a little too sensitive to the terminology, possibly fuel'd by politically correct.
I myself, enjoy shooting at figure 11.59 targets with my camo painted 700 police with my mildot scope at fairly long range. I call it my sniper rifle due to the fact that the police don't use it for an entry tool. It is used as a sniper rifle. That was it's manufactured purpose in my opinion. I compete lying on the ground, rain or shine, bi-pod, no front bench rest. That's it.
A firearm is a tool. Why not call the tool by it's name?

The anti gunners must kill themselves laughing when they read blogs like this. We can't even be on our side!
Promote and nurcher our sport. Bring the new and uniformed under your wing. Politely correct those in error and shoot, shoot shoot!

The big difference is the antis use terms like "sniper rifle", "assault rifle" and "high capacity magazines" as buzz words to scare the uninformed, and pass their agenda. What we should do is make a concerted effort to define these words in a way that is advantageous to us, and that differentiate our long range target rifles from weapons of war.
