re threading a Mauser barrel

I have an opportunity to pick up a fairly inexpensive barrel chambered in 9.3x62. It is threaded for a Mauser 98 but I would like to re barrel my rem 700 in 30-06 to 9.3x62. Could the Mauser barrel be threaded to fit a rem 700? Thanks
 
The barrel will need to have the shank cut off, be machined to fit the 700, and the chamber recut. Might be practical, if the shank has enough "meat" to it.
 
Well, the breech end of the barrel. The 1.1x12 Mauser threads cannot really be remachined to the Remington 1 1/6-16 threads. Better to cut the threaded portion off. The breech of the barrel has to have enough steel to allow this shortening, and still have enough material to cut the Remington breech. It depends on how the barrel breech is contoured. Apart from the chamber being partially cut, it is about the same amount of work as starting with a tapered blank.
 
The existing tenon can be turned to 15/16 and threaded 24 tpi. A sleeve is then made which is threaded internally to fit the tenon. This sleeve is made to extend past the breech end and made so that the Remington counterbore can be machined into it and the barrel. The sleeve is installed with loc-tite or epoxy. The outside of the sleeve (and part of the barrel) is then turned and threaded (1 1/16x16 tpi) to fit the Remington and, as they say, Bob's your uncle (I have often wondered what having an uncle named Bob has to do with anything but there it is). Head spacing is achieve by the location of the barrel shoulder and no reaming is required. It's about three hours work (more with a coffee break or two) for an experienced gunsmith/ machinist so it won't be real cheap but I can't speak to what may be charged since it's not I who will be doing the work.
 
I've seen sleeves used with .22lr and low pressure rounds like 38-55. Didn't know it was a suitable way to go with higher pressure cartridges. Good to know.

Another thing the OP could do is find a Mauser action. Seen a few around Tradex or someplace.
That probably defeats what you are looking to do somewhat though....
 
Ok thanks Leeper for the info. I your opinion would it be easier and more economical to just start with a barrel properly threaded for a rem?
 
Absolutely. I do this sort of thing for myself because I can but it is seldom an economical route to go.
