I've been thinking allot about reactive targets lately (the NON exploding type) and have been wondering if I should invest in some steel gongs. When I'm out for an afternoon of shooting lately...it's a mix of paper-punching with the new Anschutz (+match-grade ammo), a small amount of plinking with the same if the target is small enough/challenging enough...then I switch gears to reactive targets/CCI SV/another gun(s), etc. Always some sitting clay pigeons, often some spent shotgun hulls, jammed open-end into the sand. All fun stuff of course, but I'm thinking I'd like to hang some small gongs @ 50, 75 and 100. Anybody else shooting gongs with their 22s? Which gongs? What size?

Any other ideas for reactive targets?

Get some 1/2" and 1" hanging circles made for 50 and 100 yards. if you can hit them 5 in a row you at least know your shooting MOA groups. I have a 3x of those swinging chicken shaped spinners I have at 20 - 35 yard distances that I shoot offhand off my deck with air rifle, for a quick, quite few minutes of fun.

I've got a homemade 6"x6" steel plate hanging in the Y of a tree about 175-180yds across my field that I poke away at the odd time (just with 22 as long as it's pretty calm winds). Other than that same as yourself, paper, empty shotshells and empty 22 brass and sometimes set some of the chestnuts from our Chestnut trees out to plinking away at.

Check out princess auto. I personally like this style : https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/metal-resetting-silhouette-target/A-p8664641e

You shoot the 4 bottom ones, which flip up onto a bar attached to the top target. Hitting the top target moves the bar which drops the 4 bottom targets. I particularly like how you have to adjust your aim for each target, as opposed to aiming in the exact same spot if it's just one target.

But they have a few other options too. Currently I have one of the black steel chicken spinners (left my other one in the bush by accident last time I went out. Doh)

My favourite reactive target for .22 sessions are golf balls, I toss them out at 10-15 yrds and chase them down to 100yds with my bolt gun. On rocky ground they bounce all over the place, it's a challenge to get them to the 100yrd mark without them completely stopping.

whoops, i revealed my illiteracy

lol..no worries. Those things sort of redefine "reactive". lol I get a kick out of them, but since most of the hunting/shooting I do is as a guest on working farms...I think it's safe to assume that explosions might not be all that welcome. :)

When I was a junior shooter I would line up plastic army men on a 6x6 log at 25 yards, go prone and pick off their heads. Great fun. My current range doesn't allow for much fun with targets other than paper, a couple bunkers for hanging steel but I don't shoot it.

This is going in my range bag...love it

I work at a remote fire tower in the summer. They supply my drinking water in1/2 litre bottles. I refill the empties with grey water & shoot them offhand. Impressive spray in the sunlight from my 30-06, & challenging enough from 100 metres.

For cheap like borscht rimfire targets a line of old 12Ga hulls out of the trash is tough to beat. But if you want something you can just shoot at and not have to go out and re-set then one of the 5 lollipop style rimfire targets is tough to beat. Mine is made by Birchwood Casey. Shoot the lower ones and they flip up and hide. When all four are gone shoot the top lollipop to release the lower ones and start again. Assuming it doesn't sink into the sand and hang up the lollipops you can shoot all day.

Free standing at 25 is great fun. Braced slightly at 50 is also fun. Or set them at 100 for some benched goodness with your primo ammo.

Cans and 2L bottles of club soda when it's on sale. Shake them and shoot, lots of spray and if I get thirsty, I drink a few.
Got funny looks the first time at the bottle depot but then told them how they got like that, many laughs were shared. And I get the full deposit back
