(Readily available) rifles comparable to FN FAL?

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. A Norc M14 was next on my to-buy list anyways (Just waiting for a little more spare money and someone to run a nice gun/ammo package deal).

The XCR-M, and a lot of the AR-10 versions, are nice, but not quite the same. The Sig 542 looks almost perfect...but $2000 is a hard pill to swallow for me right now. :(

It really is a shame the C1-A1 is prohib. There's got to be thousands gathering dust in DoD storage, and they make a fantastic sporting rifle. I'm in favour of most Canadian gun laws, but there are some really stupid arbitrary restrictions.

As far as contributing, I will only say that there isn't much chance of finding anything like the FN.

The Norc M14 is a good option, and will allow for some tinkering with over time.

Just be prepared to put some parts and time into it.
 
This thread sucks. What's comparable to an FN? Nothing. That's a trollish question. What do you want to know? What mil-ish rifles can be had with a restricted or non-restricted PAL? What semis can you have?

Clarity man, you need to provide clarity.

It is a damned shame. But don't worry, they've pretty much all been chopped, crushed and smelted so they're not suffering in some dark cellar.

The whole classification process was so much Fail it's not even funny. I hate even thinking about it. Supposedly enlightened Country of people making laws based on pictures in a book.
 
closest thing available in my opinion is the xcr-m. as stated earlier.

####, it's really the M14. Lemme 'splain...

The closest to an ex-military rifle that we can actually own AND shoot. 7.62 NATO caliber. 20rnd box mag. Uses a piston/tappet to operate the action via gas. Equipped with a flash hider (I remember these termed 'flash eliminators', anyone else?).

Some obvious objections; different locking system, pistol grip, rear sights, cocking handle, other things I'm sure....

The G3's also similar, but the radically different operating system (plus the grip) places it in second, regards the question. Also prohib, FFS, dammit

That's extremely unlikely. The SAFN/FN49 is a pretty cool rifle, and the action and gas system is a lot like a FAL. Overall it looks more like a Garand, however. I once had a pal who owned a SAFN in 30-06...it shot extremely well. I wish I had bought one then...I think they are still NR...

This whole discussion revolves around 'comparable to an FN-FAL...

The M14 is a 7.62x51 battle rifle that's easy to get [Norinco] and has all the power and heft of an FN. Otherwise quite dissimilar. However you can get high-tech pistol grip stocks for them if you care to spend the money.

The FNAR is a .308/7.62 rifle...it has a pistol grip and a box magazine and looks like a lot of fun [I'd have one if they weren't so expensive]. Also NR, I believe...

Perhaps the OP could clarify his question. LOOKS like an FN? WORKS like an FN? DOES what an FN does, regardless of looks or design?

Why not? It's long, looks scary, and goes boom! I'd say that it would be a bad idea to use the Keltec as a step to boost a section of infanty into a second floor window though. The FAL, rifle, spear, and now ladder wrung. I guess by my own standard the Keltec just doesn't cut it.
 
I'm not concerned with the actual action, mostly just the look and feel.

But it looks like the only close options are pretty pricey. When I've got some spare change, I'll probably wind up building an AR-10.
