Real Scoop on 10.5" & 11.5" AR-15s?

Yeah, agreed... thats why I am putting this on my AR

At the last LRRC UCS shoot a fella had an AR with a JP dual chamber muzzle brake on an AR-something-er-other chambered for .308. Guys shooting beside him we're getting blown sideways. One fellow resorted to putting his shooting mat over his head (I thought it was a little extreme). Everyone whined about that one after the guy left. After that I started looking for muzzle brake options for those sort of circumstances.

Although I think Blackthorne's new AR has some serious sound issues compared to mine. I keep hearing that high frequency twang from Monday's shoot... either that or its my wife complaining about my ammo fund... either way its annoying...
Yah..my Stag is LOUD. And the blow back from the comp is NASTY. I LOVE IT!

But you and I agree it would not be very friendly at a stabled range or indoors, protection or not. I may be going for the same flash hider after you wear it for a while and give me a range report.

I don't hear that high end twang. Must have been all those years doing live sound LOL!

Recall I was wearing those ####ty earplugs. The twang was probably my tympanic nerve shredding...

I thought 11.5 was short and you guys are talking about 7". Thats really short barrel. According to people over at the AR15 dot com the shortest length they recommend its 11.5. Its not a long range tack driver but a close quarter combat tool. The Israelis are using them in Lebanon so the balistics can't be that bad.

Ballistics in regard to the killing power of pretty much anything relating to the hunt the two legged beast is a moot point in this country. Guys killing in sandy country's will tell you SBR's kill just as good as other lead slinging devices. They point real well and accessorize like any other AR.

My Armalite 11.5 had two hickups within the first 500. Friend suggested I put an o-ring around the extractor spring inside the bolt. Did so, and 3000+ rounds later the gun hasn't choked once (except for failures with oversized Wolf ammo, don't use wolf!). There is another secret, I clean my guns after every time I shoot them. AR's like being clean, there is an excellent post by Pat Rogers on m4carbine.net about cleaning, I suggest you read it if you own an AR.

Buy an SBR done properly and you won't have issue (LMT, Noveske, Armalite, Colt - if you can find one and not get raped over the pricetag :p ).

I have an 11.5" AR from Questar and it runs fine, no worse than anyone else's ARs at the range.

Here's my 11.5"

RRA Upper Receiver
Wilson 1/9 Chrome Line Barrel
DPMS Bolt/Carrier Group
Stag Factory Lower

o far 200 rounds with no failures :)

Do your research and build them correctly with the right parts and you have no problems.;)

SKBY.

Can you elaborate a bit more. What are the right parts needed for short barrelled AR's to function properly.

Thanks

There are a few fixes out there for a variety of cycling issues with the <14.5" barrels but before you go boring out the gas hole or some other drastic measures, try a D-fender on the extractor or a new heavier extractor spring.

I bought an 11.5 mystery upper from a show in the US years ago and no matter what flavour of ammo I tried I was getting FTE problems. A good cheap fix. Runs like a champ now  .

Just helped someone who's having some problems with his 11.5" upper....checked his ammo first.

Sizing issues, not pushing the shoulder back enough. Mine were in at .005, his were .009 and were jamming, and the bodies of the cases were catching in the chamber. A few thou makes a difference!
