I posted another thread regarding the ideal big game rifle line up because I was doing some gun cabinet reorganizing.

My question now is what rifle would you buy/build for a moose and black bear rifle, what action, caliber and configuration but lets keep it to rifles the general public could buy or get a Canadian rifle maker build it for them.

Just go and buy a CZ550 already! They look great. They're controlled round feed actions. They hold 5+1 cartridges (not that you would ever actually need that many). They're accurate and they have a single set trigger. After shooting a CZ, nothing else compares. Just do it!

I'm not sure what the selection of stainless rifles would be like from CZ put i'll play anyway, what cartridge would this CZ be firing?

For moose and bear? The very best cartridge would the .300 Winchester Mag. But that's boring so I'd go with either the 9.3 x 62mm or .270 Winchester. But that's just my opinion. Great rifles though, in any calibre.

This one would be sweet!

I currently have one of these and really like it.

I just bought one of these in .270 Win this morning and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

And I would really like to get one of these but I think .300 Win in a 20" barrel might be a little....loud?

I like s/s bolt action Rem 700 LSS rifles even though there are several absolutely perfect cartridges from 30-06 up for moose/bear I would recommend getting a 338 Win Mag.

My Rem 700 LSS line up is now down to only 3 a 20" barreled 30-06, 26" barreled 300RUM and 21" barreled 375RUM...

I would simply buy this one back.

Sako AV 300 win mag, real accurate, stock fit me like a glove.

Then for rough going I would buy back the mcmillan I had for it.

with my pet load of 75 grs of Reloder 22 and a 168 gr TSX the POI didn't change when I swapped the wood stock for the mcmillan.

I'd reach in the safe and grab this M70 classic stainless 358 Norma that Bill Leeper built for me. Several years after that I bought a Legend stock from D'Arcy Echols and had Dennis Sorensen finish and install it.

A M70 classic stainless magnum length action with Wisner extractor. Pac-Nor 22 1/2" 1-12 twist barrel. As I said D'Arcy Echols Legend standard fill stock made by McMillan, one of only two "swirly" Legends in existence. Leupold QR low rings hold a VX-III 1.76-6X32 scope with Premier Reticles #4 reticle. All up it weighs 8 pounds 8 oz and balance on the rear edge of the front guard screw, and puts 225TSX's at 2950 fps way under an inch.

I like it enough that I had Bill build it's mate, a 270WCF on an early M70 action in an Echols edge stock. It balances the same as the Norma but weigh 7 pounds 8 oz. Early groups go a bit over an inch at 200 yards with a 130TSX at 3100fps.

I can't imagine a better pair of hunting rifles.

Nice rifle Rick, I guess I could always spice up the 338 ultra I have now with a stock etc. would end up with a similar rig, the 26" barrel has it's place sometimes but lately i've been leaning towards light and handy.

It's not as good as some of those here but I'd choose my fathers old hunting rifle from the 60's, a Win 100 semi in .308 and 18" barrel. A decent walnut stock from back when they still commonly made them. The look on his face when showed it to him after I refinished it was a sense of pride that couldn't be replaced. That and we've never got skunked yet using it. Any semi that runs flawless for 50 yrs is ok in my book.;)

I would happily run that 100.

If it was a conversation about close cover deer, there is a certain M94 32Spl that my dad bought new when he was 19 years old that you would see. It's "mine" but he's not done using it. Perfect.

My dream rifle would be a merkel, kreighoff over/under .30-06..top grade available..but..thats not reality right now...I currently shoot a remington 700 BDL stainless in black synthetic .30-06..

I am getting my gunsmith in the near future to "build" me a custom .303 enfield. high grade walnut sporter type stock. ribbon checkering, iron sights with front hood, monte carlo buttstock, Schnabel forend. leather sling to top it off, and may..maybe mount a scope..

Magnums are nice for some but not necessary. A miss on a vital spot is a MISS and a magnum wont fix the problem of poor bullet placement. Before the magnum craze, it boiled down to 4 calibers - 30-30, 308 Win., 30-06 and 45-70 for moose and bear. Ranges for these animals will be in close ( under 300 yds.) and more than likely in heavier cover.

You'll want a rifle light, quick to respond with a proven history of performance. If the rifle needs to be fixing, parts to be quickly available without straining the wallet. You will want readily available ammunition in virtually any part of the continent at any given time.

You may want a low powered scope but it needs iron as well. Which brings us to Jeff Coopers idea of the Scout Rifle.

A 308 Winchester on a Remington 700 with light contour 20" barrel, some form of peep sight and a low powered scope
or you can go to the the original version - A lever rifle in 30-30 or 45-70.
