I should just PM MysticPlayer for the straight goods, but what the heck....

How far (distance) would you guys realistically attempt to reach out and touch a critter / target / popcan with a dimunitive 55 gr Vmax out of a 223 Rem with a solid rest? I'm not talking a fire for affect thing, but a "I can do this" type of shot.

With a critter you need to know the downrange energy of the bullet and .223 drops off pretty quickly. ht tp://www.rifleshootermag.com/ballistics/223_remington.html Interesting reading here ht tp://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1548659

I did some freeware ballistic math...these things sure peter out after 300. At 400 you're pretty much using the force to will the bullet to the target.

critter, 300yds. Pop can/target? 400 easy, if I know in advance what the range will be, I will zero for it. If not, then I can probably hit it on the 3rd shot, and then fairly consistently from there on. We used to do it with part cans of spray paint. That way you know when you punched them. I will say it is easier with a 22-250, though.

250-300 yds max. Even at 300 most shots off hand or tree hugging for rifle support are a hail marry as you all know.:p

All coyotes should be taught the fear of Jesus, or should I say gunfire..:D

So let em have it at any range but try for accuracy if you can.

I was smacking suspended 6" plates at 369 yards today. It actually became uneventful after the scope was zeroed (up 29 clicks or 7.25 MOA from a 100 yard zero) to compensate for the 26" drop! Don't think I would venture a critter bigger than a gopher at that distance though.

If you can hit him you will kill him. Coyotes are not bullet proof thank god.

A good friend of mine from work shot a coyote 6-700m away with his savage 12FV in .223 and it hit the ground instant.
