Can any ar upper go on any ar lower? If I buy a .223, take off the upper and put on a 9mm upper, is that all it takes to use it to shoot 9mm? Are other parts required? When people say "complete upper", what parts do they mean?

If people are familiar with the conversion kits for pistols, that is sort of what I envision. Am I on the right track?

Thanks!

You will also have to deal with the buffer, and a lower or adapter to accept 9mm magazines. There are different systems.

Thanks, I am going to try to find some diagrams of that. I am a visual learner! I want to get an AR and then convert it to 9mm, but be able to easily go back to .223.

The original Colt system had the magwell adapter pinned into the lower, so if you want to switch calibers it requires a trip into the workshop. A quick change would require one of the drop in, aftermarket adapters or going to the Olympic Arms conversion system, which is an entirely different design.

I have my 9mm AR set up as a dedicated unit, if I wanted to It would take maybe four minutes to convert it back to .223

swap out the buffer , remove the mag block slap a 223 upper on and go
