Really big rifles for moose and stuff.

My 404 Jeffery is a one shot Moose killer as is my 416 Taylor and a 375 Browning.
I have several smaller rifles that would suffice but the big ones are comfortable to shoot and carry.
Although this Fall I am going to try my new 7 lb. Whelen.

Not Big, but I'm setting up up an older Ruger 77 in 338wm for elk this season. I just love the caliber. 270 for back up..
Waiting on the word from Cerakote BC on wait times before I ship it out.

I have two .375 H&H for Moose, Elk, Bison & Cariboo or even deer in Grizzly territory but I haven't yet gotten an LEH draw. 6 years..... still nothing. I know some people who have been applying for 18 years and never got an LEH draw. I don't even pay attention to the odds crap because that's the odds of last year. I always just apply for where I want to hunt. I've been applying for the bow or scattershot only zone Mule Deer doe on Quadra for those 6 years which has a 50:50 odds of winning every year. I have never won.

Moose are easy to kill. I use a little 300 WM and one of my brothers uses a dinky 308. They die every time. I shot a grizzly with a 458 Win Mag, though. It was comforting carrying that rifle in the willows... That was my dad's rifle; now I have a 9.3x62 that I consider sufficient for medium-sized dangerous game.

I will be moose hunting with my XCR-M this season with another CGN member but I will also be bringing my MLR in 338LM for back-up as there are spots there where 700m shots are possible when glassing some of the more open areas local moose sometime visit.
This will be the first hunt for my 338LM: mounted in a cadex chassis and fully dressed coming in just short of 19 lbs I don't plan on lugging it too far lol. Luckily we mostly travel by side by side.

Shot one bull Elk and a grizzly with a .416 Rem. It worked very well on both. Custom fairly light Sako for the Elk and factory Safari Express on the Grizzly. Barnes bullets on both. .270s kill that stuff just fine. .416s kill them finer.

Small calibers kill just fine, but I love the big bores.took a couple black bears with a 416 taylor years ago, have used the 375 ultra on moose, had a custom ruger #1 in 450 ackley that my brother decimated a good bear with a 500gr @2400fps, later it became a 460 WBY....
when you smack a critter with those large calibers, usually the reaction is amazing, and as they say you can eat right up to the hole, not alot of blood shot meat

I'll be using my 416 ruger African when moose hunting this year...hopefully will get a chance with our whole THREE day long season.

Enough of the .270 for moose questions already. Who has used, or does regularly use the "big stuff" for moose, elk and other North American big game? What kind of setup and loads are you using?

I used to have a .416 RM that I used on boar and I tell you it was like a fly-swatter. I used 400gr Hornady RN. My buddy asked to used it on a really big black bear and again the load was effective, to say the least. Unfortunately I sold it before I had a chance to shoot a moose or elk with that rifle.

I know a couple of folks like WhyNot? have used .375's. Bone Collector used to use a .458 WM and even posted a picture of a successful moose hunt. Casull (who unfortunately no longer posts here) even went to the .50 cal stuff with a custom Ruger No.1 and had a bolt action .577 REWA at one point! I think it was him who told me that things start happening once you go to .416" and up.

So let's hear some stories about using chamberings that keep modern day armoured moose and elk from limping off! ;)

I've never had a moose "limp off" and escape...

170 grain .30-30 kills moose dead.

20" 1894 saddle ring carbine.

Big gun, lots of recoil...

But seriously;

The "biggest" gun I've killed a moose with was a .303 no1mk3 sporterized SMLE

The "limp off" quip is a thinly veiled jab at the "is a .270 or .280" enough threads...

I am so close to buying a 460 Weatherby, just so I don’t have to listen to the guys at moose camp brag about the biggest rifle.

I know of a slick .500 Jeffrey for sale, and for less $ than what you can find a .460 Wby Mag...

:)
