Really big rifles for moose and stuff.

Used 375 ruger and 378 weatherby, 340 weatherby, 338-378 weatherby. Don’t need to say that precision is more than anything but they did the job very well...

Many years ago, a big cow moose with the 444 marlin, 240 gr remington "pistol" bullet that supposedly doesn't work well. I'm not sure how far the bullet went after it exited the far side, but the moose went about 75 yds.

big? hard to get bigger than the .50 BMG. not only will you get your moose, it'll be partially processed. lots of hamburger or tenderization!

Actually a 50 BMG does surprisingly little damage , assuming you put the bullet in the chest broadside. I have shot quite a few muleys with the 50 BMG loaded with Hornady 750 gr Amax bullets. You get 1/2" entry and 2" exit. I have not shot any game closer than 750 yards with the 50 however so can't speak as to what close range would result in. I don't eat heart, lungs and other assorted guts so no real meat loss to speak of.
A poorly placed shot I suspect would offer about the same damage as a 243 does at close range, the difference being the 50 will affect both sides.
This same bullet turns Wiley inside out though.

Shortly after getting my Marlin 444S, after the first two 'questionable' experiences on Moose with the 240gr Remington factory loads, I went with the Hornady 265gr in my reloads. Seemed to be the solution to improved performance.

Here's a dandy boolit to cast up using alloyed lead at 15-18 BHN. This JD Jones designed 325 gr projectile has proven dangerous game performance from .44 mag handguns on cape buffalo and at only around 1400 fps. At 1300 fps, JD reported complete penetration on a trophy moose on a shot through the shoulders at 60 yds. It's hard to argue the performance of a well designed cast boolit at moderate speeds. Weight carries the mail & good placement delivers it.;) NEI sells the molds.

I'll be packing my 375 Ruger for elk this fall, it's not big, but as big as I have. 270gr LRX @ 2660 fps from the 19.6" barrel

My moose hunting this fall will see me carrying either the 280 Ackley 160gr Accubond @ 2950 or 6.5 PRC 140gr Accubond @ 3050

 An aspect of reloading that never really appealed to me  was casting. However, it was a cost effective must during my initial 'efforts' at competitive handgun shooting. When I got my 500 S&W a decent supply of components including bullets was hard to come by. A friend and fellow shooter locally is hot & heavy into that aspect of things and since then, I've obtained all my cast bullet requirements from him. ;) To make sure I'd never be 'tempted' to cast again, I sold the equipment I had. Two cast 44's I get from him are a 250gr SW with gas check. The other, a a similar item of 325gr :d .

I load the 265 Hornady FP with H4198 for it now, but the 240 factory stuff did work also.
I also have tried the 265gr and 300 gr ranch dog cast bullets, but couldn't seem to get quite as good accuracy.
I like the gun, but am thinking I want something with a bit more range for this season.

Bin a bit lax on firing up the Lee pot meself lately as I tend to get most of my cast from Bullet Barn and they work great for me. Sure wish they had JDJ type boolits though.

A marlin .444 with stout 300 grain speer soft point handloads used to be my automatic moose medicine. It knocked 'em down with authority and I saw one penetrate a moose from stem to stern. A 45-70 with 405 grain soft points accompanied me too at times and did a good job, but I noticed the marlin 444 shot considerably flatter past 100 meters or so.

I have killed one bull with my 54caliber black
As well one with my 72cal black
It is unreal how hard a great big round ball hits game
Bighorn sheep hunted with my 54 last year but could not close the gap to a acceptable range on a legal ram with the old girl
Sure do want to get one with her

Nice to see other fans of the .444 Marlin. I haven’t shot anything with mine yet but I was carrying it this spring for bear loaded with 325gr cast and powder coated bullets.

The last time I used mine as the primary on a Moose trip was on the last trip I made with my Dad, early 70's. Since then, a friend has used it on his first two Moose trips with me, scoring on his first. For the last number of years, it has basically filled the role as a spare on trips, and in that, it scored once more.

My brother used a Honda Accord on a moose. Worked pretty good, but he was laid up for 4 months after.

All joking aside, I did shoot a nuisance beaver with a 340 wby not real long ago and it was with fairly “dynamic” results.
