First time I did it I had to go back where I bought it and ask for help (this was before the internet)

Have owned several now and no big deal once you've done it a few times ;)

Pretty sure they need it every now and then. It was awfully dirty. I'll do a complete once a year. But no more that's for sure!

These Ruger .22s were never designed to be dismantled. Shot a MKI for a few years, tried to dismantle it for cleaning, gave up.

That's incredibly silly. Not you, but the fact they weren't made to be disassembled. Especially a .22, not all rimfire ammo is particularly clean. Do function issues appear if you don't ever take it down for cleaning?

I was kidding, guys. Of course it was designed to be dismantled;).

This MKI was Ruger's first gun. They were probably still learning how to design guns is why they designed it the way they did. Bought it used without a manual.

Since Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet in 1989, I couldn't go online to research youtube, WD40 liberally sprayed into its innards was all I could do to clean.

I have a Mark III that I have put 1000's of rounds through it no prob. Have not taken it apart, just bore snakey once in a while... can you actually damage it by not cleaning it?

They are not hard to take apart and put back together.

You should be able to put it back together using the parts diagram in the owners manual...

...If not, just check Youtube, there are a LOT of videos to help you.

Here is a good reference website: http://www.guntalk-online.com/detailstrip.htm

And yes, replace the trigger and get rid of the mag safety. (I made my own custom spacer using a stainless nut, bench grinder, drill press, Dremmel and micrometer - Fits perfectly, took me 45 minutes and cost me 35¢ for the nut. Saved me from buying a MKII hammer and bushing (or expensive hammer kit) and/or "playing around" trying to find stainless washers that might almost fit).

She's all done now, but next fall when I take it apart again I'll make sure I have some aftermarket parts ready to slap in and get rid of the mag safety.
