Want to build a .300 H+H. Have a great M1917 (P17) Enfield barrel/action that has already had ears cut off and drill/taped for scope. I'm looking for a gunsmith here in Canada that has a .300 H+H reamer to do the rechamber and action work required.

I will let others from the board who are located in the west coast recommend gunsmiths in your area.
For your mod's you will require a new mag box for your conversion and a follower with spring, these parts are available from Gunparts
http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrProductSKU=543990A. The reciever has to be opened up to acommodate this new larger box, these mods have often been done by most of the knowledgeable smiths. The bolt and extractor have to also be modified.
Good Luck

I had a 300 H&H reamer but I sold it after never having anyone want to build one in 25 years.

What make is your P17? If it is an Eddystone I do not recommend doing anything to it. They are heat treated diffently than the Winchester and Remington actions which are very strong good actions. I know I will not rechamber or rebarrel an Eddystone.

If you're not stuck on 300 H+H the 300 Weatherby is an option. The mag box is the same as H+H. I have 2 of these in Weatherby. We changed the bolts over to p14 and didn't have to mod them. As Dennis said the Eddystones are more prone to problems, but I have found that if you can remove the barrel without cracking the reciever the action will be ok. Every action is different. I have a BSA here and the action is not marked with a mfgr. It is in the process of becoming a 35/416Rigby. Good luck with your project. Mark

Dan, I have the reamer for 416, and sent it to be changed to a body reamer with removeable pilots. I'm not sure about this one. I fired a 378 Wby when they first came out (or at least the first one I saw) and swore I wouldn't have one. Hoping a better designed stock will tame this one. We'll see,Mark
Magnaflux is a necessity if your not sure of your action. Only the reciever ring should need to be done.

(Hope I'm right here as I've watched it done and just assumed it so)Magnaflux is a process which uses iron filings and a magnet or electromagnet. We send our stuff to a motor rebuilder for magnaflux testing. Probably charge a minimum setup I suppose. Only takes a coupl'a min. Mark
