Hello,
So I am building my first custom.
The Smith I chose only has a SSAMI spec reamer.

I will be using Lapua brass and 180gr Hybrids.

Someone here who has been helpful with info suggested a no turn reamer with a .315 to .317 diameter and .220 freebore.
This is for 7mm (.284)

JGS quoted $207.00 USD and $23.00 USD shipping for custom reamer.

Any other opinions on what specs I could go with?

Thanks
Mike.

personally, I would use the shorter throat reamer and then throat longer to fit your loaded ammo. bullets can vary base to ogive so I prefer to grab whatever bullet I want to use in bulk and set off that lot of bullets.

Throating in a second step works just fine and I have been doing this for over a decade. Shoot enough and run into enough lots of bullets and you will quickly understand why this is the preferred method... at the very least, go off the components you are going to use.

Assume you will do all the brass prep to get rid of the donut? When you do, you can push the bearing surface lower into the case without any accuracy issues AND offer more room to chase the lands.... so you should seat some bullets in the case the way you want to use and measure directly. I would start "shorter" and work the OAL out as the throat wears. The 284 neck length is short and the Hybrid bearing surface is short. I would give myself more options....

What really matters is clearance around the case neck. I prefer 3 thou per side as a min... 4 thou is fine too. Turn to 12 thou and I would use a .314" to 316" chamber neck diameter. Lapua brass is typically 14 to 16 thou thick so that no turn chamber dimension is NOT.

Always measure the stuff you are going to use. Dimensions vary.

Good luck with your build.

Jerry
