Reamer Question

So, to me it looks like they got you hard on the labour. The $300+ bedding job was unnecessary, as even I would have sent that back, and I'm not a world-class gun builder!

I have Talley rings, and I sure don't see a need to lap them, but if I did, I wouldn't pay $125 to have it done...

AFAIK B&C only inlets for standard channels. You order a Rem L/A stock, and it fits a .270. If you want a magnum, it needs to be opened up, but the misaligned bedding block is an obvious flaw. I had to open mine up for the magnum barrel...

As for what to do, I don't know. By altering the stock like he did, I'm sure there is no warranty on it now... :(
 
Absolutely not no warranty now, and that comes from B&C. If you are interested B&C do make a magnum contour stock in the medalist. 2265 is the stock number. Issues over that also. They were also under the impression that that stock # didn't exists and ordered the non-magnum one. This is after e-mailing them the number twice. It looks as if they took the bedding block right out of the stock.

Oh and did I mention I had to clean filings out of the chamber and the barrel was filthy. They never even run a clean rod through it. Not bad for a shop that builds rifle that cost the same as a new pick-up.

So. Why did you choose them to do this work?

It seems a little outside their specialty, for all intents and purposes.

From their site, and from the stuff I see on line, they do high dollar work with wood stocks. And nearly unlimited budgets.

Seems a little like going to a Ferrari dealer, to have them have a look at the leaky head gasket on a Ford truck. You just know you are gonna pay...

Not saying you have any reason to expect to get screwed, but I'm looking at the references being made to "if he hates this kind of work so bad why did he take on the job", and thinking that there should have been some red flags flying and some considering going on as to how things were going to turn out.

I think at this point you might be far better off to be done with them, beyond getting your parts back. Find someone that builds the style of rifle you are after, and have a long, detailed talk about what you need to have done, in order to reach the end result you desire.

Can you live with it, over all, as it is? Excluding the throat, that is. If so, find someone with a throating reamer, and get the work done as you require. Shouldn't cost a bunch. The barrel profile. If you really want it turned down.... Your call.

Should that have been done correctly? Sure.

Do you wish to continue dealing with the same outfit? Your call.

FWIW, I see some pretty wide ranged mixed reviews of the B&C stocks about the web. I'd be inclined to get some pictures of the end result and send them in, along with the full story. Worst case is they shrug or do nothing. Best case is that they send you a new stock. You never know. It should have gone back, but too late now.

Ralf Martini does some very good work. Remember, Jim AB did supply the custom reamer and also the specs for the reamer.
Jim AB, have you tried shooting the rifle yet? It just may turn out to be your dream rifle, all of the components are of fine pedigree, it may be more of a thoroughbred than you think.
 
Well bearhunter I'm an Arabian man myself. A thoroughbred just wont do. No I haven't shot it. I hate the way it looks and hate the weight and balance. I would use it as a post before I would shoot the thing. The stock colour, which is not the gunsmith's fault is wrong. B&C admits it is but because of the excess work done will not take it back. That is the gunsmith's fault. Should have been different browns, it's a olive green.
 
Hey Jim,
If you were colour blind like I am, that wouldn't matter. Green, brown, red, all the same to me. It's a blessing at times. Other times, like when I bought the pink pants thinking they were grey, it's a bit of a problem! After almost 40 years, my wife still asks my opinion on colour combinations. I've become fairly adept at guessing what she wants me to say. Regards, Bill.
