I have a USGI flashhider I want to ream out.
The proper method is to use a #7 tapered pin reamer to a diameter of .406".
I don't have a reamer and can't justify buying one for a one off job.
Can I just use a drill (close to .406") to open it up?
Thanks.

FYI, taper reamers are cheap n easy to aquire from princess auto. Can also be bought there in singles so no need to buy a whole reamer set. I believe the last one I bought was under 10.00. Use plenty of fluid.

Got myself a reamer and started to do the mod.
The reamer seemed to get dull very quickly.
Then I heard a "ping"!
Sure enough, it was cracked. Cracked from a slot to the tip.
Guess it's toast now?

Another word on reamers...
While I use the standard formula of 4xCS/Dia for drills, reamers should be run considerably slower, like 1/4 of that speed.
eg. for a 1/2"drill
4 x Cutting Speed of 80sfm (for mild steel) equals 320rpm / 1/2" dia drill = 640rpm roughly...
A reamer of the same dia would rum maybe 160rpm with plenty of fluid.
Slow and steady.

When reaming something with slot's in it like a flashider the reamer should have spiral flute's on it to avoid "catching an edge".

The usgi armourers/shop maintenance manual states #7 taper reamer. Does not mention it needing to be a spiral flute. I have mine done on a small shop lathe, and as previously posted, 150 to 160 rpm with constant fluid flow. Feed to fast and you will crack her, too much heat and same thing.

I was using a lathe, was using low rpms, probably could
have used more fluid. Straight flute reamer, was cutting
good at the start but after a while seemed to stop cutting.
I still have the original Norinco (no slot) flashhider but
would like to have one with the slots. The reason for reaming
was my rifle shot way off, and it looked like the bullets
were hittng the end of the USGI flashhider. Anyone else have
that problem? When running it in the lathe it didn't look like
it was running true.

Well, I do have ausgi flash hider listed in the EE , itmight even be NM already. Another trick is to use a dimensionally correct bayonet lugged chinese flash hider as they are NM diameter from the get go ;) I got one of those listed too
