Rear sight barrel mounted, or flip up peep?

I am working on a compact, bolt action bush gun. Barrel will be 18.5-20" long. What's your preference for back up sights - a barrel mounted rear sight or a flip up peep mounted on the rear base?

I find the large aperture rear peep to be as fast as the typical barrel mounted rear sight and sometimes faster. My favorite part of the peep is it aids the eye in only focusing on the front sight, which aids in accuracy and is otherwise hard to do with normal open sights. And if you have a small aperture you can screw in, they can be quite a lot easier to shoot consistently than typical open sights.

I prefer aperture sights to open rear sights usually. In either case clearing scope bases may call for a higher front sight. What are you looking at for scope/rings/bases? What is the rifle?

Warren, they are Redfield flip up aperture sights that came on their scope mount bases 30-50 years ago. It was an option, and you had to order them with the base. I had them attached to Weaver bases by simply drilling and tapping to fit the original screws.

In use, one simply removes the scope, and turns up the blade 90 degrees to use the sight. They are adjustable for windage and elevation, and weigh less than half an ounce.

It amazes me how such a simple and efficient product was allowed to be dropped from production.

I would go with the peep because of the short barrel

Short of Ted's Redfied style, a Brno 601 with a pop-up peep sight could be the basis of a fine custom carbine. The problem is finding one.

I really like peep sights, especially dual peep. The longer sight plane helps as well with accuracy. Quick target aquisition, accurate, light, and well, just looks good!
