What's the best deal around on a rear sight pusher? I'm shooting a G17 at the moment but I could have used one on some other pistols in the past.

Edit: G17 not G7

I assume you mean Glock 17? Sight pushers are incredibly expensive, $600US 'ish?? (the exception being the Glock tailored ones for about $100 each - the bad news is they can't work on anything else)

I use a wooden cutting board (to hammer on), old t-shirts (to wrap pistol in) and a brass punch set to use on the sights (and a hammer of course :)) - some dexterity and precision is obviously required ;)

This combo has been very good to me; you need to have a sense though of whether or not the sight is the right fit - If you hammering pretty hard and the sight isn't budging, the sight needs to have a little material removed from the offending area. (Most Glock Sights from the big names though are prefect and you don't need to worry about this.)

I've only use a sight pusher on a Glock and they are great but can also dent the sights. I've never dented a sight with a brass punch.

BTW, they (brass punches) can be obtained at Princess Auto.

I think recoil over thousands of rounds would submit them to more force than drifting with a punch... no?

I doubt that everyone with tritium sights uses the proper pusher.

Ummm the army guys advise against using a punch on tritium sights .. apparently that tritium stuff has some radioactive qualities

sight pusher is the way to go for tritium sights

The radiation danger posed by tritium in sights is negligible. Unless you're inhaling with your mouth right on the vial when you pop it, you probably get more radiation daily from the sun and cosmic sources.

Regardless if a sight pusher is the 'way to go', it's not the only way. Careful drifiting with a PROPERLY FITTED sight (ie: not oversized) should not damage the vials.

For anyone that may be interested,
I have made a couple sight pushers.
A couple for Sig's and one for a Glock.
Even machining the thing from scratch
which I do, I still don't see how those companies
and charge $600 $700+ for something
that is mass produced.

I've done a few tritium sights with the brass punches... no problems; as mentioned you have to "know" that the sight you are installing isn't over sized.

WithoutWarning: You should post some pics of your sight pushers... you might have something there you could sell in the forums. I'd like a good universal pusher and would be willing to spend $100 :D

I agree, that's a good idea. I'm making one up rite now for a fella I shoot
with for his Glock. Except this time I'm going to make different
pusher attatchments; Glock (tapered sides), Sig. . ., if it'll work.
The wee flange at the bottom that locks the slide down will also have
to be interchangable.
When I'm done, I'll throw up some pics, attatchments or not.

I just installed a set of TruGlo TFO's on my USP .45 last night with a brass punch and a vise. The sights only required a bit of filing to get them to fit.

There was no damage to the tritium vials by not using a sight pusher. Just be CAREFUL, and there is minimal risk in breaking the sights.
