Rear sights on No.1 Mk.3

So I have this old No.1 that looks to have been converted to a sporting rifle at some point. It doesn't have any other markings on it other than the Lithgow mark on the right side and a date or something on the left. It came with a wood sporting stock, but retained the brass butt plate and cleaning kit, I picked up a cheap Ram-Line for it. It has a junk 4x scope and mount on it (drilled and tapped), and to be honest I want to get rid of the scope. Won't hold zero, some cheap piece of junk SIR sold in the early 90's. So I was thinking of just pulling it off since it still has sights on it, or at least I thought it did. The front sight is there, and it appears to be windage-adjustable. The rear sight looks a bit different than what I've seen on Enfields in the past, looks like an adjustable sporter sight, similar to what you'd find on say a Marlin .22 - just slide the ramp forward/backward to change elevation. But the ramp is missing, and there appears to have been a screw in there as well, possibly to lock the ramp in place. Any ideas as to what I'm looking at? I'd like to use it as a short range bear gun and want to try open sights on it if I can.

Does it look like this?

Yours will not have the "ears" if its a sporter.

Sorry, I just checked, the windage & elevation and elevation only adjustable rear sights for the SMLE are out of stock, you still can get the front sight adjustment tool though to bring the windage on. - there is a fellow in Ontario who specialized in # 1 MK III parts, I can't remember his name though, let me look around. . .

Can't find it, I think his name is Russ Wood up in Blind River Ontario, he's not online though, does anyone else have the contact information for him?

Yup, a few pics will make it easier.

Mind you with a "severly sporterized" No1Mk3, (if it's missing the whole rear sight assembly), it may be easier to keep it as a shooter or sell it as a scoped No1Mk3 and find a less-bubba'ed rifle that has all you already want on it. You probably can sell the scoped one before hunting season starts for more than you'd pay for a non-scoped, sporterized No1Mk3 anyways!

All this being my humble 2 cents,

Lou

Sounds like you have a Parker Hale Custom No1. It will have a Williams sight on it. If you can post a pix I tell you for sure or email it to me rgg_7@hotmail.com. I may have some part sights around....have to check. Got lots of complete military sights.

Pictures as promised! Only Blackberry quality though. Hope this helps, it originally came in a hardwood Monte Carlo-style stock with brass butt plate but it had most definitely seen better days. Still want the old girl to throw some 180's at a black bear this fall through open sights if possible.

Not a bad looking sporter, the barrel looks whole too. I imagine you could find a rear site and a set of wood and restore it. I think the stripper clip bridge might have been milled off, but it would still be the best looking bear gun out there.

I don't think it's worth the labour of fitting a new rear sight. The only way to do a satisfactory job is to get a few sight bases and rear sights, and mix and match them until you get everything tight. I once tried five different rear sight bases before I found one that matched the barrel, then tried several sights before I got one that fit without wobbling back and forth.

Barrel is full length. Adding the correct sight base and sight would enhance the rifle. Good set of wood and bands ...you would be back to original.
