:( I’m putting a new stock on a already sportserized Mauser 98 (1908 Brazilian), The rear trigger guard screw is short, the one I have is 1.44 inches long not counting the head I need one that is 1.66 inches long. My question; is the standard length for the rear screw 1.44 inches long or is it longer and where could I purchase a new screw?

You might be SOL. I just measured 4 Mauser screws I have in my shop and they are all around 1.44-1.49".

You can get screws from Brownells but they don't list the length. I suspect they are standard length.

To make things worse, they're an odd-ball pitch - 1/4-22.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of stock are you using?

I bought one of Richards Microfit Gunstocks “Dual Grip Thumbhole Style black/grey laminate. The action seems to be in place but the trigger guard may be out 1/16 inch. I’m ordering some inletting black to check everything out. http://www.rifle-stocks.com
Thanks for the help Jerry
  :(

I asked about the stock because of my experience with a Boyds laminate. It was about 1/4" too deep. I had to inlet the trigger-guard further up into the stock then trim the 1/4" off the bottom of the stock. The top of the trigger-guard should be 1/32-1/16" from the bottom of the receiver when all is said and done.

I've used 1/4x20 stainless steel socket cap screw's. Cut them to the length you want, put a hex wrench on it with some oil and screw it into the rear hole.
It'll be tight(duh) but you'll get what you want without breaking the bank.
I worked in an all stainless machine shop so they were REALLY cheap for me to get.

this is soooo very true:eek:
If you need to and you should need to inlet the stock further
(especialy with a micro fit:rolleyes: ) make sure it comes up level with the reciever to within an 16th or you will have all sorts of feed problems

Mauser 98 screw length.

If you remove the steel guard screw bushing/spacer from the original stock you can bed it into the new stock and it will establish the depth you have to increase for the bottom metal inletting. Takes the guess work out of the job.

The bushing also fills a role and that is to prevent incremental compression of the stock under that narrow rear tang from screw tension. One of the first pillar type bedding methods albeit a small diameter pillar.
