reasonable price estimate cut crown barrel?

I am thinking of getting a rifle cut down to make it a bit handier to carry etc.

Thinking the minimum legal length is what I want for a bolt rifle.

Is that 18.5 inches now? or less? I am not sure. Advice please.

I am probably going to buy a beater 222 or 22-250 for this project.

Anyway if some one could offer a estimate of what this would cost to cut & crown a barrel, along with someone you know who does a good job, I would be grateful for your help.

I'd do it for 30$ - not a hard job at all. Depends if you want it re-blued as well.

Shipping is going to beat your wallet to death.

Look for someone in your area with a lathe and likely get it done for a case of Beer or a bottle of hard stuff.

It's not a difficult job.

There are special hand tools available from Brownelle's to do the job and you might even enjoy doing it yourself.

If a guy brings a rifle in with a scope and sling and in a stock, it will cost more because It all has to be removed for crowning and then re assembled.

If it is to be short (under 19 inches) I have to remove the trigger group and rail in order to get it through my lathe... that costs more...

If it is to be 20 inches and just a barrelled action - $25 to $40...

Quotes here in NB range from $60-80 if it’s just a SS barrel being cut n crowned with no sights to tap and reinstall or cold blueing touch up. May seem abit steep but not when you factor in shipping costs to send it away and back again.

If you send it to a bigger shop it’s gonna cost you about $80 bucks or more plus $60 for the ride.
If you find a retired guy, who knows how to use a lathe and you bring him a barrel and action only, it’s gonna cost about $30,$40 bucks.
You can cut the barrel off yourself , with an hacksaw.
Save about 5 minutes work.. lol
I found 19 inches was best on my .308.

I tested at 1 inch increments starting at 24 inches and stopping at 19.
