Reasonable purchase price for a Sako? Updated

If the rifle is truly a safe queen and unfired, $750 is a steal for an AV, and, considering what newly mass produced junk sells in stores today, $1200 is still fair (assunming you like AV's and the 375 chambering).

I will

Forgive me for being blunt but you are asking for opinions so I will share mine. I understand you haven't inspected the rifle as yet, but even still, let me get this straight. You said you have no intention of paying 1200 for this rifle. Why not?

You are claiming to have a line on a minty, old Sako AV, that is an unfired safe queen and is chambered in a fantastic calibre. And to boot, it is/was owned by an elderly gentleman. Sounds like a real dream find and if it is in the condition described, why would you insult the owner and try to rip him off with what I call a "lowball" or "tirekicker" offer? Just pay the man!!!

I am not a Sako expert. However, I do own a similar older AV also in the 375 H&H. Mine is probably fired, but is almost 100% and has a gorgeous piece of gloss tiger stripped lumber from head to toe. This rifle is the fanciest gun I own and it is a safe queen. I don't even shoot it. The quality is unmistakable and if someone tried offering me 750 for it, he would be put on my ignore list, regardless of how high his second offer was.

I've never understood guys who play games. It's not enough that they find a perfect speciman and have first dibs on acquiring it. No, for some guys this isn't enough. They need to rip someone off to feel good about the deal.

I firmly believe in karma and what goes around comes around. You never know when the shoe will be on the other foot and wouldn't you appreciate someone not dicking you around and offering you a fair price? I know I would. In fact, I've paid more for something just because I really hit if off with the seller and want him to feel good about the deal too. And no, I'm not made of money but if I want something that bad, I pay for it!!

I dont want it that badly. Got more than enough dust collectors to serve many persons for many lifetimes of hunting and shooting.

If I do not make a deal I will ask the seller permission to have you contact him. Perhaps you would be interested in the rifle?? Sounds like you would give it a nice home.

Thanks for your opinion on the matter.

Sako

Well thanks for the offer. I'm not looking for another Sako right now but would always look at pictures. If the rifle is truly as clean as described, I'm certain the right Sako collector would gladly pay 1200 to 1500 all day long and maybe more. (As earlier stated by another member when you look at the price of a new one and they don't have the character of the old ones in my opinion.)

My cousin Tikka sold a beauty old Sako with the god awesome 3D "jump out at you wood," with ultra high gloss bluing. It was chambered in 340 weatherby mag and he got ALOT more than 1500. It wasen't any special run safari either, just a perfectly as new old Sako in 340 that had gorgeous wood and bluing and a Sako collector just had to have it. I'm confident that if posted here with pictures, it would sell. Especially if it has nice wood. Good luck.

Art paid 1200 for mine!
If the rifle is unfired and as new. You would be lucky to get it for under 1200.00
750.00 would be a bargain for sure! I would like to see a pic of this rifle if you could get me one.

I sold a beautiful 300 win mag in near perfect condition a couple of years ago including mounts for $1100. A 375 doesn't add value to this rifle as they are fairly common.

As a side note, an AV is a fairly light rifle in that cartridge, less than 8 pounds bare.

Well I finally got to lay my hands on the rifle. Owner would not let me remove stock. Close inspection of chamber revealed rust. An oily patch pushed through barrel revealed more rust.

Story is that this rifle was sent to a hunting guide as a tip from a client. It was put away and forgotten about. Obviously it was never oiled on a regular basis.

I stood firm on my $750 offer and it was declined. I will give no further consideration to this rifle.

If the rust will or can be cleaned out 750.oo Would still be a good buy.w:h:

Sako

That is a real shame. It always amazes me how someone can neglect a nice rifle like that. To some, a rifle is strictly a tool, and they give it no more thought than they would a shovel. Such a waste. Must have made you disgusted to see that.

I think you made the right choice. The guy will probably stick it back into the safe and let it rust for a few more years, then go through this again. Next time he'll want even more for it...it'll be even more "classic".

It is a shame...a lot of guys would use that gun and care for it.
