reassembly of rem. 742 help!

So I've accomplished what I needed to do and now I want to put it back together................easier said than done. So there must be trick in putting the spring and gas tube back in the 742, can someone let me in on it. I'm having 1 bugger of a time.

loosen off the barrel nut, slid the gas tube in through the front of the slied with the piece that holds it to the gas block. Feed the spring and compress it so you can get the gas tube into the barrel nut. level it and tighten away. put the retaining pin to hold the tube in place...or something like that.

O.K. now I can put the whole thing back together no problem ....the issue is how do I compress the spring and do it??? it seems like there is way to much spring for me to hold onto.
